I have the TT685 but I have a different trigger - Godox X2T
On the flash unit, hit the button on the far right until you get a screen shown in amber which means that the flash is in receive mode. The amber color will soon go away, but it's your immediate clue that the flash is set to receive. then make sure that the group and channel match. Once set like this, I can hit the flash test button on the trigger and the flash will fire.
Optionally, I can change the mode to manual or to repeat x number of times, or the zoom to set the focal length.
And I have no problem with the flash and trigger right up against each other or separated by some distance.
Thank you all for the thoughtful suggestions. Dano wins the prize. Apparently if I try to sync the pair when they are very close together, they will not function even if you move them apart after syncing. The need to be synced at least 6' apart. Then all is good. So thanks again.

So glad it worked out!! I know first hand how frustrating it can be when you don't use a piece of equipment for awhile. But it sure does feel good when you figure it out again. Off camera flash can produce some amazing results and you have a great set up. Best of luck and please share some of your results! Merry Christmas!!!!! :)
