Obviously you totally missed the point and spirit of my comment. That is the UHH way I guess. LOL

Cheers and best to you

NO, obviously you misread MY comments... Maybe YOU, as a Working PRO, would be better suited for groups such as " peeps and Pixels ". You still don't get it ... YOU are missing the very first rule of communication. SPEAK TO YOUR AUDIENCE ! 99% of the folks on this site are NOT working Pros as you like to constantly remind us as well as your MANY awards and accomplishments. That upturned nose sucking in that rarified air can be dangerous to the gray matter. Myself, I am just a simple run of the mill bottom feeder who sits on my humble Alabama mountaintop back deck munching on ribs from my smoker and enjoying a cold libation while passing around on the net poorly edited and highly compressed images to friends, neighbors, etc... who really appreciate what this hobby is all about. CHEERS and BEST to you as well...

How many big prints does one really make (beyond 20" x 30" or 50 cm x 75 cm)?
If one does not make hardly any, I would focus on my framing and composition (which I do) so I do not have to crop off anything and frankly in this case 24 Mp is plenty of pixels (even enough for slightly cropping ig one feels like it)!!!
Yes the race to more pixels unless in the specific case I mention above is just a commercial argument totally useless for the vast majority of users (not to mention the fact that the photographers that need big files go one step up with the Fuji GFXs or the Hasselblad XDs... so I frankly find 60 Mp digital cameras (whatever the version) kinda useless and money traps (now there might be other features on these cameras that one could need but it is another question/topic).

Desire?
Those cropping to print 3x4.5 foot prints?
Commercial work?
Billboards?

My largest prints so far are 8x12.
My 18MP camera does just fine for my needs.
Even if I were to print a 24x36.

Well if you shoot 18 Mp at ISO under 1600 for 8x12 prints you should not have a problem. Beyond those limits you would start to see the differences between your prints and a those made from a full-frame 40 Mb and above camera (not even mentioning medium format)_there is a reason for these tools. I do commercial work, and I do exhibit as a fine-art photographer as a result my prints are often over 8x12. Sorry but it is also my life ;o) and if I were to print 24x36, especially shooting over 1600 I would definitely not use your 18 Mp camera because it would simply show and I would lose quality (resolution, nuances of colors). I have used anything from 3 Mp to 100 Mp cameras and I have seen obvious differences although I do not think I have an eagle's eye.

I DID mention "commercial" work.....

Most of us are not doing commercial work.
And I'm not a pixel peeper, so the 18MP is fine for me, even at 24x36.
I also don't need to resolve 100+ hues of one color.

My old bridge camera that I still use is only 5MP... Should I throw it away?
Not gonna happen.....

Sorry my standards don't meet yours.

We each have our own desires and requirements, eh?

(Yours evidently exceed mine. )

My remark was intended as a semi humorous tongue in cheek comment. Yes you are correct: film and digital are different. However 110 is film and APS is also film and my point was that I got "better" results when I went to the larger format of the APS. What I was really saying was that if going from a lower megapixel to a higher one, such as a 61 mp provided more details, etc in the image, then perhaps your going from 35mm format to say, a medium format film size might provide you with an improved image.

I already have a 35mm camera and a scanner of 35mm film. What I will use in the future will probably depend on what Ricoh/Pentax produces. I have never worshipped at what I call ‘the altar of detail’; I have a 24MP “APS-C” camera, when there is a 36MP “FF” camera available, so I’m obviously not particularly interested in “improving” my photography that way.

I am not sure I agree with you. The broader the range of comments and the experiences shared, the better all of us are otherwise we become a sect, and in that case a sect of half-blind trying to guide the blind (unless you wish to exclude them too). The first rule of communication is exchange all the more as here you have very little idea of the audience except for the loudest one (which is not exactly the best rule of communication either). Far more than you think may just read and not comment, from the whole range of the audience. Hardly veiled insults such as "upturned nose" directed at people who might be more experts than you and may have a broad experience is the opposite of communication and as a result, using such a strategy, you put yourself in a very uncomfortable situation giving anyone any advice on communication. Most people, not just the "rib-munchers" and the authors of "poorly edited and highly compressed images", can really appreciate what this hobby is about and not just your friends and neighbours (if that were the case what are you doing here?). Let us chill out and be reasonable here.

"The thing about resolution is that once you have enough there's very little advantage to getting more."

I totally agree with that but it is only one aspect of the question, the rest is what is "enough", and for what purpose. We need context in order to answer this in a constructive way.

"Enough" is relative to each individual.
