New year hopes : What should the camera makers be working on for 2024 ??

Although camera manufacturers will continue to manufacture mirrorless cameras and lenses the dSLR will not disappear. I use my Nikon D7000 very often, more than I use the D610.
My concept of mirrorless is cameras and lenses that are small, reason why I went with Olympus. I know that some of their professional lenses are big and heavy but technology does not allow otherwise. My "long" lens is the kit Zuiko 40-150 f4-5.6 which is small and light enough to take anywhere. I am very pleased with the quality of images I get from it.

When it comes to cameras and lenses I do not wish much because it is impossible to know what manufacturers have in mind, which will be guided by the market. My only hope is a finally better performance in camera to control noise. I know denoise programs do a great job but it is another step controlling noise. I also hope prices get under control, now Nikon and Sony price their cameras as if they were Leicas.

Why Pentax wants to introduce film cameras is beyond my understanding.

That is simple - they are looking at what young artists are using. Some people think DSLRs are passe.

A Nikon Z80, APSC, IBIS, weather proof, same size as Z50, 26mp sensor, essentially a D500 replacement.

Make them look more like a cell phone.

A cell phone has lenses attached! I moved to DSLR because of the flexibility, allowing me to use whatever lens would be useful at the moment.

Many u-tubers have been posing this theme lately ......but none talk about the possible replacement for the Sony RX10 - especially as it relates to wildlife/bird shooters ! - They think everyone wants to continue to drag around 600-800mm lenses !

Every one complains about size weight of lenses in this genere - they also complain that the one inch sensor is maybe not good enough.

So my wish for 2024 is a M4/3 based dedicated lens camera a-la RX10. This camera would have a 14-300mm f3.5-4.8 Zeiss zoom lens ( 28-600mm equiv. ) taking a 77mm filter at most and an in camera pixel enlargement option similar to Clear Image Zoom. I am thinking $2200 as a price point. Short of making the whole camera/lens together, it would be nice if someone ( Zeiss) would just make the 14-300 lens in an M4/3 mount for maybe $1700.

What are your thoughts/hopes for the new 2024 year ??

Yes, so this would be basically updating the RX100 ....to M4/3

Excellent idea!

The reality is that the cell phone manufacturers are aspiring to make cell phone cameras as good as large sensor cameras. They're doing very well but they're still not there yet - and probably never will be.

For me, Ricoh to come to their senses and make a flagship Pentax MILC, i.e., Mirrorless "K-1 mark II - like". And for all manufacturers this technical detail, make your cameras native 16-bit RAW. SmartPhone cameras with an ability to choose Ζ’-stops from say Ζ’/1.7 to Ζ’/5.6 to control DoF. I often shoot close-ups with my Phone, as I do with my DSLRs.

Sadly, my guess is that wishing for a new Sony Rx10 is a long shot in coming true. It is not in the company's interest to create a camera that needs few accessories, think lenses. Would I buy an updated one, yes in a heart beat. Beyond that, I do not need anything else to be created that would give me GAS! πŸ™‚

Happy New Year to all!

Several corps will just try to stay...solvent.

I see the wish lists from everyone...the typical stuff.

But what will happen...as opposed to what is wished for is...

Sony is going to integrate AI right on the chip sensor...making another leap forward in capability.

That's what WILL happen.

Ricoh/Pentax did sell the β€œK-01” - a K-mount MILC - at one time, but apparently they decided that people expect a MILC to have lenses with a shorter flange distance, which would have diminished the value of their K-mount lenses and forced them to develop a whole new set of lenses, so they have taken a different route.

Panasonic Leica already makes the following lenses for Micro 4/3:

10-25mm f/1.7 (20-50mm FF equivalent)
25-50mm f/1.7 (50-100mm FF equivalent)
50-200mm f/2.8-f/4 (100-400mm FF equivalent)
100-400mm f/4-f/6.3 (200-800mm FF equivalent)

8-18mm f/2.8-f/4 (16-36mm FF equivalent)
12-60mm f/2.8-f/4 (24-120mm FF equivalent)

12-35mm f/2.8 (24-70mm FF equivalent)
35-100mm f/2.8 (70-200mm FF equivalent)

The first four lenses will take the user from 20mm to 800mm full frame equivalent coverage, and fit into a backpack that is tolerable for most people.

The major advantage of using zooms with smaller zoom ratios is optical performance. Those first four zooms are all very good to excellent performers. 1.4X and 2X teleconverters work with the latest incarnation of the 100-400, extending its reach to 1600mm full frame equivalent!

Micro 4/3 is pretty darned impressive already. There are dozens of other Micro 4/3 optics from OM-Systems, Panasonic, Sigma, Voigtlander, Meike, Laowa, Rokinon, Tamron…

I like your idea but change the lens to a 12-400mm (24-800 equiv)...
