To be accurate, the Z8 combo with the 70-200 2.8 comes in just under 4 lbs at 60 oz, not 6 lbs.

sorry, brain fart:(

A discontinued, or soon to be, camera and lens.
Not a good choice.

Norma, I urge you to consider M43 format. They are smaller, lighter and cheaper than the larger formats.

M43 has A 2x crop factor which means a 200mm M43 lens has the equivalent field of view as a 400mm “full frame” camera with a smaller, lighter and cheaper package than the equivalent in larger formats. This is great for wildlife photography.

[quote=Normafries]I have been wanting to move to mirrorless.

Check out nikonusa.com. They have all of the specs you might want on lenses & cameras.

I have been wanting to move to mirrorless. I need to be able to photograph animals in low light, so also considering getting Nikkor 70-200 2.8. I have been using Canon 7D Mark II for years, with L lenses, and to me, it has been OK but not great. But I have zero experience with Nikon of any sort. A bit concerned about weight, too, as that lens weighs quite a bit.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Especially those of you that actually own a Nikon Z8....

Everything is backwards on a Nikon when compared to a Canon. Lens mounts turn the wrong way, zoom rings turn the wrong way, control dials. But lens hoods mount clockwise, so be careful when grabbing the lens hood to change lenses.

One example; when zoomed in on a distant subject that is moving rapidly towards you (think trains, planes, autos, skiers, cyclists, runners, etc. ), on Canon you can zoom out to portrait mode by holding the lens and rotating the camera body counter-clockwise.

I will follow your topic. I do pet photography and landscape with pets included most of the time. I shoot with a Nikon D750 and interested in the Nikon Z8 but concerned about weight too. Being a petite lady can be a bit of a hindrance!

I have never been a petite lady. Or petite anything actually.
So to me, the D750 is a small light weight item- except for them big ol lenses!
I like my D80 with a plastic lens as easier than the equiv D200 and a tire thumper of a pumper.
Some here have re lensed, and gotten a cross draw strap to lower and distribute the weight.
I've seen some dual shoulder camcorder rigs that's work.
The Z8 is a pretty impressive piece of kit, tho. Maybe a purse sized Z9? Still not small.
Without a lens it's still @ a pound to carry. and @ $1000 more than that D750.
And you'll need new lenses.
BTW, I just checked- my D610 with the old silver lens is @ 10% lighter than the Z8.
And if I had your money, I'd buy the Z8, too. Also. anyway.

As a new owner of the Z8 I’ll tell you it is fabulous. You can get an adapter to use your canon lens. I am a retired US Navy veteran collecting SS and the weight is much better for me than my D810. Still learning the Z8 and loving the experience.

Modern lenses are controlled by the electronics. Things such as focus, exposure f-stop control (some lenses) require the lens be able to communicate with the camera. Without that even if it physically mounts, it is 100% manual control. What electronic features are available when using the Nikon body and Canon lenses?

Is it free ? Functional obsolete bottom ranked stuff is great if the $$ is right, like near zero.

I have been using a Z 8 and the 24-200 f4/6.3. This combination is 28 ounces lighter than the 70-200, has a wider range and I find I don't miss pictures due to the smaller aperture.

Thank you to all of you who have contributed opinions on this. I decided to rent a Z8 with the heavier 70-200 2.8 lens and see what what I think. I am certainly aware that in general wildlife photography, a 200 is not enough reach. But for the specific work I want to do, 200 is more than adequate as long as it works well in low light.

The link (to purchase) this review mentions all the Zs up to, not not including, Z8. So you re using it successfully on your Z8?
