Good comments Don. Thanks. I am reading Last Child in the Woods. The author describes how life is very different for young people over the last 20 years or so then it was 50 years ago, more regimented, much more time spent indoors.

Everyone I knew had plenty of time for hobbies when I was in my teens and 20s. The various clubs and organizations had memberships with wider age ranges - rail fans, music, photography, conservation are some groups I was involved in.

Great book, Richard Louv has evidence that time kids spend in nature benefits them physically, emotionally and acdemically. This even involves being in a classroom with windows to the outside, but, of course, being out in nature brings the most rewards. Getting kids outside benefits them. A classes in photography that would have an outside emphasis would be could, but there would be many and high hurdles to surmount.

Phone cameras will always be inferior to those big cameras. Photographers who are serious about their art will use a camera not a phone it produces a superior image. Phone cameras are excellent snapshot cameras but will always fall short of high quality

Of course if images were made of the same objects, persons and scenes by phones and by "those big cameras" and were laid out on a table, we all (you included) would be able to winnow out the "chaff" produced by cell phones separating those from the "clearly superior" images produced by "those big cameras". All we would have to do is look between the four corners of the images and the truth would reveal itself.

Who wants to own a desktop computer, a camera body, editing software, and one or more interchangeable lenses to simply post to the internet, something done instantly from your phone? Does the gray or blue hair prevent people from seeing this simple and clear logic?

Or no hair?

In consideration of the points being presented in these comments:

Ask Admin for approval to open a new section?......
.......maybe call it "Decades"?.......
.......it could have some subsections -- e.g., 20-30 yrs; 30-40 yrs; 40-50 yrs, with selfie, grunge, landscape mode, situational unawareness, etc sub-subsections within each of those.......

Actually Dustie, you may have the beginnings of an idea. Instead of creating Decades Section, anyone who has contact with younger folks making phone images could invite and encourage them to post their work on the phone section of UHH. However warn them that, for the most part, the rest of forum is mostly old turds sharing war stories and squabbling. Thank goodness for the civility of the women who post.

Most clubs (of any kind) seem to have an attitude that new members need to prove themselves worthy to be in the club. Here on UHH many older members put down people for asking questions, some even try to make others sound stupid for asking those questions...NOT a good way to attract new members.
Not knowing something does not make one stupid.
For example:
"That has already been discussed here ad nauseum"
Why does it matter how many times a question has already been asked? If you can help, please do, if not, just move on.
Nobody likes to be treated like that, especially young people.

This is the way I felt yesterday but didn't respond. There is a lot of meanness and snarkiness among members in this forum. Young people don't need the rude, hateful attitude of the boomers here. If a novice should ask a question or needs some information about an aspect of photography, chances are a whole herd of trolls will vent their rudeness to an innocent question. I don't go to "The Attic" anymore. The intolerance among the members here is unnecessary and immature.

Do you think it is possible to attract younger members to UHH? Or is that a hopeless cause? What would it take?

Some junior high and senior high schools offer basic photography classes. My grand-daughter and grand-son started their interest in it because "grammy" does it.
Cell phones are a commodity everyone has so toting extra gear isn't necessary or convenient. Unfortunately, I think photography using expensive lenses, etc will become a passed thing. Sharing photos electronically has taken over versus printing. As for the UHH forum itself, who knows. That's just my 2 cents worth. About the member age question: 74.

I just checked on some numbers….UHH Main Photography Subscribers=109,899. UHH Smartphone Subscribers=669. It seems that many members on this site view smartphones like a foreign language that they have no interest in learning.

I'm 92 years old and belong to a local Camera Club. The oldest member is 103, she's not as active sense her children convinced her quit driving at 102. We have a few younger members, but most are over 50. There are so many other things to keep the younger people busy, such as attending their children's functions and some work two jobs. Probably in the future most Camera clubs will be on line.

I believe "subscribers" are since inception. I think no one ever gets deleted.

They would not tolerate the clad in stone attitudes here for more than maybe two .....

And if treated the way members here treat each other, they'll be gone in a minute.

You are correct. We do none of that.

By the way...I have never advocated reading the book first. I advocate charging the battery first, then pushing buttons and turning dials. In the hands of anyone but old folks, modern cameras are quite resistant to damage or breakage from being used. We also start in some sort of automatic mode, then gradually, one parameter at a time, learn how to take control of things. We do learn about metering patterns, but not the intricacies of autofocus. Single point half-press works great. We do talk about how to move the focus point around, but few find the need.

I don't know the percent (it would be interesting to know, though), but it is obvious to me that a vast majority of members here are afraid of their cameras. My one non-negotiable is that no photographer be afraid of his camera.
