I would love to show everyone what is going on with photography at school as an encouragement to others to get involved. Unfortunately, the rules concerning sharing photographs of students are very strict and very clear. It is also unwise to share photographs of the inside of our buildings. The teachers have a hard enough road without my violating their privacy. So the occasional verbal clue is about all I can or will provide.

Would you be allowed within your restrictions to encourage your students to post examples of their work in this thread, without causing difficulties for neither you nor for them?.....work that does not include students, staff nor facility.

Let me see what might be done about that request. Some patience may be required.

Curmudgeon is right. Many online forums have members who are "not young." I watched a video that a YouTuber posted about a trip to a train show - lots of old men. I used to go to the motorcycle show in NYC, and there were lots of old men there, too, although the younger crowd was well represented.

Come to think of it, every group I've belonged to has consisted of "mature" members.

We could take a survey of the ages of our members. I'm 79.

I'm 76

Mirrorless user since 2015.

The very first digital cameras are mirrorless. It only became a DSLR after the sensors became good enough. And later became the Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera when the digital viewfinder became better than the ones used in video cameras.
The upcoming innovation now is making a cheaper global shutter camera for MILC. Because the global sensor was actually an old technology but only used on very expensive video cameras.

I mentioned the other day on some post or another that there's a whole lot of photography that isn't intended to be art. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It still can and should be done skillfully and purposefully, but it is craft, not art.

This diversity of purpose (art, decor, documentation, snapshots, ...) is perhaps the primary factor that makes community here difficult. Add diversity of background, experience, and now age, and the problem just gets more complex. It doesn't mean that it's not worthwhile, just that it's difficult.
I mentioned the other day on some post or another ... (show quote)

Yes, craft is a much better description. Maybe we should ask “ what is the incentive “ for younger generations to join forums such as UGH? . What do we offer other than constant squabbles over gear etc… How many young folks construct model train setups … How many collect stamps or coins ? Times they are a changing and everything is as it should be. Nuttin but change. We have to embrace it and go with the flow.

Photography is generally not time consuming or expensive. But writing about photography is time consuming.

Forget about DSLRs; soon there won't be any available to buy.

Pentax has a “Film Project” that may result in a film compact camera this Spring - then perhaps a film SLR if that works out. This supposedly is a result of their managers seeing young people purchasing old film cameras.

A usable 14 MP Fuji bridge camera, used, goes for about $35.

There are quite a few 100% free editing programs.

So it doesn't take much money to ignite a person's interest in photography IF the interest is there.
