You and the other UHH people.
That is fine. But the rest of the world has moved on.
Cell phones create vertical shots and that is the way the world turns at this point in time.
And most every photo viewed is on a cellphone in the vertical position.

Can't a person hold the phone horizontally? I never owned one, so this is a serious question.

For taking photos I do.
But I hold it vertically for most of the other apps.
Internet browsing depends on how the site is laid out.

Most of mine are horizontal.

Most mine are horizontal with a camera and many with a phone if the project being documented requires it.

The younger people using cell phones for selfies or posting images on social media are not thinking of lighting/composition/white balance - all the components that photographers consider. And their more sophisticated iPhones or Galaxy phones do so much for them in the way of lighting and white balance. But composition is not their strong suit. I use my cell phone exclusively now, and orient the phone predicated on the subject, which is mostly closeup flora, or cats/kittens (I foster for a large shelter).

Sure they can. They can hold it either way, depending on the subject matter and how they want to compose the picture. One does the same thing with a regular camera, whatever the situation calls for. A cellphone camera is no different. It just so happens that many young folks like to hold it vertically because it usually calls for that orientation and they’re comfortable with it. Formal photography isn’t what they’re doing.

Who uses a PC anymore?

I only use my cell phone when I'm away from home. I even still have a land-line.

Regardless of how any of us feel about how a camera, smartphone or otherwise, is oriented, at the end of the day, what does it matter? Not everyone is a professional photographer, not everyone is an artist, although some think they are, and some use photography as a media for communication with their friends. So really, this is really all about nothing. We all have our preferences and someone else’s doesn’t matter.

And to echo Fstop12, I invite you all to check out and even participate on the Smartphone Photography section. You will see photos using both orientations. There are some amazing images and some not so much, but all are great examples of folks who just want to share what they’ve captured with their cellphones, and they’re all fun in some manner.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 plus. ( free upgrade). I am not really satisfied with the camera. I guess it is OK for quick photos in a pinch. When I am looking for things to shoot a couple of days before I will use my phone to take pictures of the area. Many pictures I take need a tripod or monopod.
I had an opportunity to use a S23 ultra and it is a huge step up in the quality of the camera compared to mine.

Depending on what I am shooting, I use my manfrotto tripod with my IPhone mounted.

Emile Pakarklis has a great YouTube video on how to hold a smartphone for stability and easy rotation from vertical to horizontal. It works well.

Emile's technique works really well once you get used to it. I like using the built in finger holder on my Peak Design Camara case. The strap lays flat until you need it and then is easily accessed when the situation arrisses.
Once I have my finger through the strap I can easily switched between landscape and Portrait orientation. My hand acts like a human L Bracket. Your finger through the straps secures the camera so you don't have to worry about it dropping or slipping out of your hand. In case you are wondering what the 2 red disks are at the end of the phone, those are used to attach my Peak Design Lease strap. This is how I carry my phone around when I'm out shooting on the streets.
