Regardless of how any of us feel about how a camera, smartphone or otherwise, is oriented, at the end of the day, what does it matter? Not everyone is a professional photographer, not everyone is an artist, although some think they are, and some use photography as a media for communication with their friends. So really, this is really all about nothing. We all have our preferences and someone else’s doesn’t matter.

And to echo Fstop12, I invite you all to check out and even participate on the Smartphone Photography section. You will see photos using both orientations. There are some amazing images and some not so much, but all are great examples of folks who just want to share what they’ve captured with their cellphones, and they’re all fun in some manner.

I already subscribe to that section. As I said there are real photographers who prefer smartphones. I wasn’t knocking smartphones. I was commenting on the fact that most people use them for snapshots. And, I’ve seen some great photos done with them, but that is because it was a tool, like every other camera. The real factor that makes a photo great is the photographer.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 plus. ( free upgrade). I am not really satisfied with the camera. I guess it is OK for quick photos in a pinch. When I am looking for things to shoot a couple of days before I will use my phone to take pictures of the area. Many pictures I take need a tripod or monopod.
I had an opportunity to use a S23 ultra and it is a huge step up in the quality of the camera compared to mine.

Same scenario, different "box". Just more boxes out there, so more people are taking pictures.

You have a valid point. Photography isn’t all about art, nor is it all about the latest and greatest camera gear. It’s all about using what you use, however you use it. In other words, different strokes for different strokes. I appreciate your viewpoint and comments.

It is because of twitter, instagram, and snap chat, things like that that require vertical images and video...

Only if you view on a phone. I view social media on a PC and it is horizontal.

I agree. I might add that in addition to having no idea about formats, they don't care. It's all about snapping the photo and sending to Social media.

I do. A desktop and a laptop.

I think there is a cell phone in my glove compartment. There is a cable in there somewhere. If I ever need to use the phone I will most likely have to charge it.

Different strokes for different folks!

One major change: picture-taking is now free!

And nor more time delay or hassle dropping film off and waiting to get the prints.

And no more wasting money on shots that didn’t come out. We can instantly delete the bad ones and save just the good ones and at no cost. Pretty cool, eh?

You and the other UHH people.
That is fine. But the rest of the world has moved on.
Cell phones create vertical shots and that is the way the world turns at this point in time.
And most every photo viewed is on a cellphone in the vertical position.

Maybe because most every shot is vertical???

Most of mine are horizontal.
