My first car was a 1951 Hudson, my second a 1952 Chev hardtop much like the one in the photo. My first motorized vehicle was a 1949 John Deere H. It didn't run when I bought it for $15 when I was 12 or 13. Spent 3 summers dismantling it and reassembling. Had a total of $45 in it by then, sold it for $50. Learned a lot with that experience. New piston rings, new gaskets and I don't recall what else. The JD H was gone by the time I got into cars.

I only performed minor maintenance...you did the whole nine yards. I envy you.

I'm 74 and my first road car was a '48 Dodge 4-dr Deluxe with the visor, suicide doors and fluid drive transmission. I had a '38 Pontiac Business Coupe before that, but very limited road time.

My Dad had a few old Mopars with fluid drive.

It's funny. Of all the pictures that my Mom took of me (she was "the one" that got me into photography) from birth on, she never took a picture of my favorite bicycle or my first car. I'd always wished that I had both, but...
Long story short, I ran across this (taken from the internet) not too long ago and it was like seeing an old friend. On my limited budget I was able to buy some "Port-O-Walls" (from J.C. Whitney") and I always had "pine tree" deodorizers hanging from the rear view mirror. This is identical to mine right down to the "not very shiny" grill. Stick six and three on the tree and it didn't burn much oil. I had the skirts, but liked it better without. Fun times!!

My first car?

1963 Studebaker Hawk GT R3. 289 c.i. Paxton blower. Purchased 1964. Sold 1974.

Great car. Not great brakes. Front disks (Girling) non-vented solids needed a better power booster.
Same color (“champagne gold”) as photo (not MY car!)

I love the old pictures. Thanks for sharing. My parents didn't take many photos either. I got interested in photography when I was lucky to get a part-time job in Korvette's department store in the photography department when I was 19. I worked full-time and then evenings at Korvette's. My children probably have a thousand photos documenting their lives every little step of the way. I always took photos of my cars. My first car was a '62 Chevy Impala SS all black convertible. I borrowed $500 from my father to buy that car. My favorite was my 1966 Triumph Spitfire, color was British Racing Green.

Great story. You're obviously a car gal as evidenced by your fine choice in autos. Did the Chevy have a red houndstooth interior and a 327? Cool car.
I remember Korvette's in Hartford, Ct. in the late 50's, early 60's. It was across the street from G. Fox & co.

Was this what your interior looked like? Mine did. Identical.
The center of the steering wheel and the chrome script from the dashboard are all I have to remember my Chevy.

Can't remember if I ever seen the inside of it... we weren't married then... she was a friend of my sister. By the time we started dating, when I returned from Vietnam, her dad had given her another car... 61 Chevy Biscayne... in a lighter green.

I'm not sure what year that was, but my parents had a green Chevy from the same era, early 50's. I know one thing, the steel on those cars was THICK!! I don't know how it ever got pressed.

The Mercury Comet is similar to the '73 Dodge Dart that was my first car. Red with a black vinyl top, six cylinder. Nice car.

My first was a used 1941 Dodge Business coupe. One seat and a huge trunk. The trunk was large enough to accommodate at least 4 friends who chose not to pay their way into the drive-in movies. The drive-in attendants never noticed the low profile of the overloaded car

I was lucky, both my parents took some photos.

I guess I did have a tricycle, but no photos of that.

Your first picture reminds me of the bumper sticker - something like, "My other car is a train."

The '53 Bel Air that was the first car shown in this topic appears to be an exact duplicate of the car I drove during my college days 60 years ago.
Even though I was taking photojournalism classes at TCU at the time, I don't recall ever shooting any photos of my Chevy with the pushbutton AM radio.
A couple of years later I replaced this car with a '59 VS stick shift Biscayne. That's the one I wish I had kept.
Thanks for the memories.

My first car - a '64 Barracuda. There weren't many on the road and it got a lot of attention. What WAS on the road at that time was the Ford Mustang ...... everywhere!

The Hawk was a great looking car; it would still look good today.
