I don't want an answer, but I know some of you will post a number. I'm guessing that all of you have hundreds, if not thousands, of CDs/DVDs. If you buy a new car or a new computer, you will probably have no way to play those CDs. Sure, we can download what we want - if we can find it. Then, we have to organize it on the computer, keep it backed up, and decide what to transfer some of the songs to another device for playing in the house or car. In other words, it's a nuisance.

I still have Cd and DVD players, so I can take a disk off the shelf and play it. There are still lots of Cd players available on Amazon, but they're generally small, "Boombox" types. Amazon still has lots of DVD players available, too, and they're generally under $50. I wonder if I should buy one as insurance against future unavailability. You can also buy a VHS player, but they're close to $300. For almost $400, you can buy an 8mm projector that also records to digital. If I had a lot of undigitized 8mm film, I might be tempted.

FYI - Vinyl record sales outperformed CDs in the US for the first time since 1987, according to a new report. Just over 41 million vinyl records were sold in 2022, to the tune of $1.2bn (£. 99bn). Only 33 million CDs were sold, amounting to $483m.

I rip CDs to .AAC files with and for my Apple Music app.

Many people buy the LP for the graphics, lyrics, and other printed materials. Then they listen to CD or other digital media.

Remember, almost all music is recorded digitally now, and has been for 40 years. Even if it’s on an LP, it is recorded, mixed, and mastered digitally. But LP mastering — done correctly — is done to different standards, to overcome limitations of the analog medium. Although the LP sound is less honest, some folks prefer it.

That depends in part on how much bandwidth you tell the ripper to use. Don't use 128k - use 256k or higher.

That may help some, but the lossy compression takes its toll. For casual listening, it’s acceptable, but lacking for the full musical experience.

Well, wouldn't listening in your car qualify as casual listening?

Yes, especially because the background noise limits the dynamic range. Just don’t toss the CDs - you can use them for more critical listening in a quieter environment with better speakers and associated equipment. If you don’t want to store them, you can rip them to lossless digital files such as FLAC and store them on any storage media. If you don’t want to use a computer with a CD drive, there are special appliances that will rip, store and play your CD collection.

If you want absolutely great audio with no digital or physical storage. Let me again suggest a high quality lossless streaming service such as Apple Hi def or Tidal or… Unless you’re looking for some bootleg non commercial music back stage type music, you’ll be had pressed to think up something you can’t find (they have 100M+ songs), and the huge variety and instant access makes it easy to explore artists and genres you might never otherwise listen to. And MQA quality is as good as audio source material gets. $15.95/month for Apple Hi DEF and a $200 DAC will get you an unlimited audio source of the best music you’ve ever heard, and that is a real bargain. Add a quality set of headphones which the DAC will drive directly, and you have a system that will rival the best high end audio you can buy.

I developed my love of music listening on transistor radios, car radios, and cheap record players. I'm not a hi-fi snob, and I love having my entire music collection with me wherever I go.

Then a Walkman type device must have changed your life - it dramatically changed access to good quality music for many millions.

But you were still limited in the number of cassettes or CDs that you could bring with you.

Why not copy all your CD's to a hard drive?
Then backup that drive.
Then backup that drive.
I have a small pc that I leave the music drive plugged in so I can playback my music through my home 2 channel stereo.
My laptop in my lap right now connect to that small pc using free TeamViewer so I can pick what I want to listen to.
Works great.
The pc is connected to my SCHITT Bifrost dac, feeding a SCHITT RAGNAROK.
Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh music.

Couldn't agree more. I have ~300 VHS tapes and ~100 DVDs of some of the greatest movies and TV shows. I'm free to choose any ones without having to check so and so's streaming catalog to see if it's available. And I have top-of-the-line players to show them.

Actually, I should have said IPod type devices. I have a solid state one (IPod Nano) that will fit in the palm of your hand and hold hundreds of albums
