Bob,
It will still run after 22 months, but Microsoft will not support it or issue any updates subsequent to the termination date.
I wish you trouble free running!

I was still using Win 7 up until about three months ago.

I love Linux too (but I use them for servers), but your experience is, in a word, weird.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 come with OneDrive, but Windows won't move your desktop, documents and pictures to OneDrive by default. It will only do that if you install the corporate version of OneDrive and you ask it to (or your machine is on a domain and put your credentials on OneDrive and ask it to backup.)

And in any case, even if it does backup, it can't run out of space on your computer simply because it'll only create a hard link to it (the command is "mklink /D", if you're curious), so there's absolutely no way it would run out of space.

I've setup Windows for many, many years, 100s of them, for corporate clients (I work as a network and systems engineer for an MSP), and I've never experienced the issue you're posting here.

Just got PC Health check to run, had an optional update fail, says processor is not supported for WIn 11 at this time, guess I just have to hope windows changes the requirements.

My friend's desktop, running Win 10, has the same issue. He cannot upgrade to Win 11. It was worth a try, Bob. Sorry!!

My current desktop was built by my local computer shop in 2021. Not too far from you in NJ. If interested: https://safehavenpc.com/
They have been my go to place since 2011.

I will just comment that when I installed Win 11 on a new platform, it enabled OneDrive by default and stored everything (including the desktop and Outlook .pst data files) there by default until I noticed and remedied the situation.

BTW, I’m not one of those “anti-cloud” guys, but I use Amazon S3 for DR and I dislike the implementation of OneDrive. Other than that, no issues in migrating from 10 to 11 on any of my machines or running 11.

I think I'm going to wait until the last minute to get something new, see what develops and is available, do have a travel machine that's already W11, just it cannot process photos on it, too small, too weak, really considering making this into linux and maybe learning GIMP .

If you can find the aps you need, Linux is a great alternative. It’s no accident that almost all corporate/enterprise servers and HPC clusters run Linux.

Just a funny slightly off topic story. Red Hat corporate in RTP, NC was my customer at NetApp when they first went public. I remember standing in the parking lot having a conversation with my SE and saying something like: “these guys are deluding themselves, they’re a service company trying to style themselves as an OS company - I’m not investing, the IPO price is crazy” Boy, was I wrong

Agree in Windows 10 as well. I just reinstalled Windows 10 on my son's computer, and the same thing happened. As soon as the files were restored on the computer, One Drive got overloaded quickly. Error messages started appearing. Trying to delete files from One Drive just didn't work. It kept trying to upload more. I ended up uninstalling it.

I only allow my One Drive to synch my desktop that has working files on it. I don't use it for storage. I can access those files on any of my computers.

Hi
Well, I have installed Windows 11 Pro and it works like a charm and no issues. Now I am a computer engineer and know the in's and out's of the OS. But I have never had any issues wth any Windows OS.

Not even Win 1, Win 8, ME 2000, and Vista?

I never used Windows 1. The first Windows I used was 3.11. Win 8 was a solid operating system with a bizarre and annoying interface, requiring third party software to restore the Win 7 experience. 95, 98 and ME were prone to crashing, and ME was the worst. 2000 was solid on hardware that was designed for it. There were no drivers for some hardware that was designed for earlier consumer machines, hindering upgrades. Vista was also solid but bloated to the point that the hardware at the time it was introduced choked on it. Of all of the operating systems I have used, XP SP3, Win 7, and now Win 10 have served me best. I won't be trying any tricks to install Win 11 on any of my machines "out of curiosity." I'll deal with it when I buy new computers down the road.

I started programming on a old IBM mainframe on cards. I bought a PC with OS2 as the OS. When the first version of windows came out, I started programming for Windows and did do through Windows 10. In my last job, I worker on a Linux platform. It was awesome. I could make it do anything I wanted. Linux is now my primary OS because it is fast, doesn't need a lot of resources and it doesn't crash. That being said, I run Windows 11 in a container. I find that it is much more stable than Windows 10. I run my photo editing software and another that there isn't a Linux version. I actually like Windows 11. I understand your frustration with One Drive. I don't keep my pictures in the pictures folder but one I put them in. Windows can't find them.

The two big problems I have with Windows is that since I upgraded it scewed around with my photo files and has them listed only by date. Secondly, there are three different places for documents and downloads and I end up having to search all over for the file I want.

I despise computer created directories that IT thinks files should reside.....
I put Photos and Downloads off the root. Why drill down for everything.....
I set the default save location for my browsers to the directory I want it to use, as well as set "Ask where to store" so I have the option to use a different directory.
I left Documents under User though, I think a lot of programs expect them there.
