honestly i think this picture could have potential. this is the kind of stuff i like to take pictures of all the time. maybe if you could go back again and get it from a lower angle it would look very good. i also like it in black and white but of course that is just my opinion since i adore these kind of photos. the black and white gives the road or drive way whichever this is a old feel to it and gives it character. but like i said just personal opinion=]
I like the black and white version better than the color, but you lose the view of coming in from the side with it as the road is not so well defined.
I love the black and white one. It looks lonely and desolate. Like it's always been there and nothing ever changes. Doesn't look near the same in color.

All,
Saw this scene yesterday and went back and shot it this morning. Looking for very honest hard hitting criticism and everyone's opinion as to whether it's more effective in color or B&W.
Let me have it.
It's two dimensional, you need a third element. Like a tractor, or more interesting clouds, also, the angle and distance of the road is off. It would have looked better with a longer road. The road just looks to cropped to me.
Just think the long road home kind of thing, it seems endless. Also the time of year, the grass is so super green and the trees are in thier winter mode. Make it fall, spring, summer or winter. Mixing the season is not usually a good thing.
You could have also taken it at a different angle. The angle you took it at is as we all see it. So it's boring. Try getting on ground look up and take the picture during the winter with snow or the spring with all the colors, make sure the sky looks good that day too.
The winter picture could also be neat with a set of foot prints going off in the distance.
Well as usual the one's who know, like to tell what you
should do. I think you got it as correct as could be, cuz
you were there and made the big decision and nailed it.
My only advise is to make it your point of view and before
you push the trigger, all you got to do is look at your
subject and determine where to place the box, then think
about if you need a deep/medium/shallow focus, then make the
wise choice of the simple settings that allow it.
I shoot a 3100D Nikon and I get to tell the box what to do.
Or if you like, let the box decide, get your brain in gear or
,as some like, let the box do all the thinking.
Either way it will be done and I let the box do it all when
it's to fast to think but I find on most occasions, I can
do the math before I fire off, so decide or not, learn just
what you got in your hands. Know the box and know it's
limits but make the decision of just who has the best brain.
You are the eye and the box could care less just what it
can do, ... do you?
>>>>>>>>>THINK THEN FIRE or be a slave to the computer chip.
You will decide what to do, I did a long time ago. Bv
Great feedback from everyone....let me help out with a little more information. I tried a lower angle and it cut off the bottom of the twin trees at the end of the road and in person the road leading to those two trees is kind of the jist of the image. Taking it from further back is also a great idea except there's a sign on the left if I pull back. The location is the Rockefeller property in Westchester NY. An additional focal point is also a great idea, but I didn't have a spare tractor with me.
I'm going to try to do this from time to time asking everyone to be tough on an image. I love this forum, but I need more tough love to grow and I think this was a really good (helpful) first effort. I'm VERY thick skinned and I take everyone's input and try to learn and grow from it.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to give their input. Let me know what you think of this effort to get real tough feedback.
I am not an expert, but the b&W taken on a stormy day when my car broke down, every scary moving would have been in my head all at once.....lol

I played with this, though the original wasn't available, so detail is poor. Converted to LAB, lightened it up, then desaturated. Also, I cropped it, following the suggestion to bring something into the foreground. Others can say if this represents any improvement.

I'm not feeling either one. The Black n White has a boring sky and the color one looks like it needs to be color balanced. Could be my monitor, but I'm viewing on a Calibrated monitor. Just a scene I have seen a thousand times and wouldn't give it a second glance.
Sorry, but you asked.

I prefer the color one because there is not much else going on...I've tried the winding roads myself and the camera seldom catches the scene as well as I see it before me. I think the suggestion of taking it on an angle including an object that was available, like one of the fence posts up front as a picture here illustrates, might have helped interest value.
Since you asked, I like the color version better, but really don't see much potential in either one. I think this might be one of those times where it just looked better in person.
I prefer the color one over the B&W. I did not realize there is grass growing on the road until I saw it in the color version. It looks like a path was worn either by a horse drawn buggy or a farm tractor. It does have some great qualities and envokes a vision of a hard working farmer that has traveled this narrow road many times.
I have been wanting to post this pic that I had taken last month along a narrow road. I am open to comments about my pic.
