I was recently diagnosed via biopsy with basal cell skin cancer between my nose and my camera eye (left). I had an MRI yesterday and will get the result (probably) on Tuesday when I see the dermatologist who will do Mohs surgery, tentatively scheduled for early next month. If the worst scenario occurs, how will I continue taking pictures? I tried to look through my right eye as an experiment, and it seemed too weird.

I would not worry; I just had Mohs and Plastic Surgery in 2023 for three different skin cancers on my face/nose. One surgery was right under my left eye and it was really deep and the reason for both types of surgery. I am having it fine-tuned by the end of this month as the bottom eyelid is drooping downward away from the eye (causing eye-watering). Even in its current condition, I have no problem using my Nikon D 7500. Once healed, you can use that eye just like before. Best of luck with your surgery.

I had the same thing 20+ years ago I had a bandage on for a couple weeks and my scar healed so if your dermatologist does a good job you'll have a scar but not very noticeable as mine did and full use/vision.
Good luck

You'll be fine. I've had two Mohs surgeries and everything returned to normal within a few months of the surgery.

I had a skin condition which the dermatologist described to the insurance company as a “precancerous spot”, and underwent Mohs surgery on the same area twice {one after the first one had completely healed}. I don’t know that my dermatologist was more skilled than most, but it healed well, and I have a barely noticeable scar near my eyebrow - one that could easily bear the pressures of a viewfinder.

My left eye also waters, but the tears go down the wrong side of my eye...perhaps the tear duct is involved. I'm supposed to have plastic surgery the day after Mohs...He'll have to put me to sleep for that - something I haven't experienced in several decades

Praying for your situation sir and a return to doing what gives you joy!
The off eye viewing will certainly become very easy to overcome.

Unless you let this go for a long time, it's very doubtful you'll have any problems using a camera as usual once you have healed. How long it takes to heal is normally a function of how large and deep the wound.

1. use the monitor
2. Twin lens or single lens film camera
3. The surgery heals and you'll be able to go back to what your used to doing.
4. Basal cell has good prognosis.

I still have my AE-1Program, but it would cost a fortune to get the pics processed! Especially during Oshkosh, when I probably take 3-5K pics. Where can they be done, anyways?

There are photographers using film today, but in a slow methodical way.

I get 7000 pic on a 23 dollar card AND it's Reusabe. Did I forget you can see pic immediately

So, you aren’t the “slow, methodical” type.

Have courage, the answer is simple. During advanced tactical training my instructor came up to me and told me I was left eye dominant. I assured him I was not and had already had basketball coaches who died trying to get me to layup going first off the left foot. We tested and he was right. Instead of sending me home, plus two hours of hard work, I was right back on target shooting left eye.
