We are taking two months starting around Christmas to do a photo tour of the SW. Our route will take us from Northern AL through MS and LA into Ft. Worth for Christmas Eve and day. From there we will head to the SE part of NM - spend a week or so in western and southwestern NM(I have already captured the central and northwest part of the state). Next on the list is AZ and Page. I want to capture Antelope Canyon, but since they no longer allow photo tours is Canyon X a viable and worthy alternative since you can book a guide and use a tripod? The You Tube videos I have watched(at least the ones by and for photographers) are not high on the Lower and Upper Canyons. Since we will be there around the mod to latter part of January, the crowds will be smaller but input from those of you who have photographed that area would be most appreciated.
Any other "do not miss" locations are also welcomed.

Oops, almost forgot, the Catwalk in the Gila National Forest just outside of Glenwood, about 1 hour north of Silver City NM, about 2 hours north of I-10 in Deming, NM. Rated as one of the prettiest trails/hikes in America, its worth the trip if you're in the area, lots of history.

Also, just north of the Catwalk and you're in for an adventurous drive, weather depending, is the Ghost Town of Mogollon, an interesting and historical old mining town, hike up to the cemetery for great views....Cheers

If you're in texas and heading west you should really think about the Big Bend area, lot driving but tons of stuff to see and do. national park, Marfa, Fort Davis (real 1850s fort), McDonald Observatory, Balmorrea State Park, Fort Davis State Park, Terlingua. Lajitas Golf Resort if you're a golfer. If you're interested in dipping down for a few days , send a personal message and I'll give you some places to stay. The absolute best place in the Rock Cottages in BB national park but they're usually booked six months in advance,

Nice photos! But there are many, many, many Saguaros outside of the National Park!

Probably right, but not as concentrated in one place as here, and not as protected outside the National Park.

Although Antelope Canyon doesn't have photo tours anymore, it is no big deal. I visited w/o a photo tour and got all the great photos I needed.

Exactly, no dedicated photo tours necessary for great shots.

Cheers

You don't need a tripod to photography Antelope Canyon if you have your camera settings set correctly. Try to get on a tour that gets to the canyon around 10 - 12 noon. That way the sun will be shining inside the slot above and you can photograph the sand falling into the canyon from above. Also, as long as you are in Page, go to Horeshoe Bend.

I have always found Tent Rock quite fascinating.

Tent Rocks is closed right now. The number of people visiting there grew exponentially and were damaging the area and the Cochiti pueblo shut it down. Don't know when it will re-open.

Lots more but these are a few places to take wonderful and unique photos.

All good suggestions, but FYI the Apache Trail drive to Roosevelt Dam can no longer be made. It was one of my favorite places to take out-of-town visitors, but has been blocked by landslides not far from Tortilla Flat for a few years and it's not known when it will open.

I just got back (late September) from a drive from Salt Lake City to Moab, into northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon and back up to Salt Lake City through Bryce and Zyon. Absolutely fantastic. The National Parks are beyond glorious.

Canyon x has onky one very small slot that is equivalent to Antelope but it is very nice. If you can hike you might consider looking at a tour of both Cardiac Canyon and Canyon X. At least a few years ago they would let you do both on the same trip. Cardiac Canyon isnt as narrow but it is photographic. One oortion of the canyon involves climbing a rope ladder but it can be skipped and it is pretty steep getting down into it but its not a bad hike. They end at Canyon x.

Best part of both canyons is not only do they alkow tripods they let you explore some of it on your own.

With that said if hou have time i would consider also doing at least one of the Antelope canyon tours. Even though you cant get a photo tour and its crowded you can still get some bice shots looking up above the crowd.

And you do remember that Los Angeles and San Diago are part of the SW USA, too. <smile>

Back in 1990, when we took our family on a three-week tour around the US hitting many of the places we had lived in, we did miss LA. And we had spent almost a year living in that metropolitan area. My stint as a post-doctoral fellow in theoretical chemistry at USC was good, but as a family, it was not one of our most desired environs. --Richard

As others have pointed out, there is a bunch to do out here in the SW. But another suggestion I have not seen here: if you are in the Page AZ area to do the slot canyons, make sure you get over to Lee's Ferry and drive west along the Vermillion Cliffs. Pretty spectacular. This drive west on 89A toward Kanab also takes you by the road to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Definitely worth the time IMO. Enjoy!

Hello, we have spent 12 years going to the sw and seen so many awesome places. We volunteered at Red Canyon Visitors Center near Bryce Canyon and learned of so many wonderful places. This book was recommended to us by a very knowledgeable volunteer and hiker. It became our Bible. You will find MORE info in this book and see more places with fewer crowds . Written by a photographer...everything is SPOT on. Well worth it. Willis Canyon, for instance, has 3 slot canyons...right out side Kodachrome State Park, cottonwood Canyon road, Burr Trail are 3 beautiful photography trips...each a good day but a tiny portion of Red Rock beauty. Happy exploring..Mary

An excellent suggestion. I might add that Volume 2 is entirely on Arizona.
