I think the power outage killed your scanner.

We have had lots of power outages, and the scanner wasn't turned on at the time. It still starts up the same way, doing its humming and moving routine.

Thanks. It was turned off at the time, and I did unplug and re-plug the scanner. If I can find the original disk that came with the scanner, I'll reinstall it.

I occasionally have this issue. The solution I adopt is delete everything relating to the Epsom scanner. Then using the installation CD or installation files from the net, reinstall everything. It works for me.

This is an odd one. We lost power today, and I didn't realize it, so the computer shut down when the battery backup died. Power came back a couple of hours later, and I tried to scan something with my Epson Perfection V600. The Epson scanning software won't start. It's on the computer, but clicking on it does nothing. I was not using this software when the power went out.

I went to the Epson site and downloaded their new version of the software. After going through the setup procedure, I scanned a couple of pages (PDF). Each file is 4kb in size, but the page is totally blank. Now, neither version of the scanning software opens. I uninstalled and reinstalled the scanner. Now, neither version of the software will start. The computer sees the scanner, and it says the driver is okay, and the scanner is operating properly.

Any ideas?

If you are on a Mac, run Disk First Aid in the Disk Utility App. Do it from the Recovery partition if possible. (Check Apple Support for instructions if needed.)

You may have directory errors, whether on a Mac or Windows box. Some utilities can fix them, but if the damage is severe enough, you might be instructed to back up your data, reformat the drive, and reinstall everything before restoring the backup. I've had to do that once on a PC and once on a Mac.

The original files are no longer available. I tried the newer files. I'll have to delete everything and start over.

If the scanner can do anything else when working, print, copy, etc., try doing that. This is a loooong shot, but years ago we had a VCR for which no command worked, so I tried to program it as opposed to just viewing or taping at the moment. Tiny bits of info can get stuck somewhere and cause problems. When I tried it again everything worked fine. Unfortunately you said yours was off during the power failure, to me this indicates it died either during turning off or on, just happened at time near a power failure.

A possibility is the power failure was do to crossing do to a tree, etc. This happened to my mom and it can destroy lots of stuff (It did).

Over the years, I had similar problems with files, a bit gets flipped, etc. and the computer may see the file, but open it. Had a PowerPoint file that showed in the preview window fine, but computer said it did not exist when we tried to open it. Due to some difference in two copies of PowerPoint purchased a few months apart.

Good luck;

Jerry, Not to your point, but I have found my V600 scanner to be temperamental. I've had the computer report it doesn't connect. I have to restart the V600 multiple times to get the two to "talk".

I too have had my V600 scanner act like that and I have to reboot (turn off and on ) several times for it to talk to my laptop. I can get it to work but yes this might be a V600 issue. I use Vuescan for software.

The VueScan didn't work, either. I saw the scanner, but it stalled when I clicked on "Scan."

So at least the scanner was communicating with the computer/SW. what about when you install the Epson SW? Can you execute a preview before a full scan?

Can’t emphasize enough removing the USB entry in control panel when removing everything before a clean install. When I “upgraded” to Win 11, my Canon Pro 100 would not connect no matter how many times I uninstalled/reinstalled etc. finally in reading through the Logs, I found a reference to a USB printer error. Turned out that since the printer wasn’t on when the upgrade was done, it couldn’t be found, and the USB device was flagged as disabled even though the entry under imaging devices was fine. After removing that USB client completely in control panel, the installation worked perfectly. Took many hours to find that one.

I have the very old HP Scanjet 4P. It requires SCSI and Windows XP or older. I can run it with Windows XP and my PC which as a SCSI port but only if I install the HP version of Windows XP. A generic version of Windows XP doesn't have the driver for it. The driver that came with it would only run on Windows 3.1. It's pretty ironic that a lowly 300dpi scan of an 8.5x11" sheet would take 25MB and Windows 3.1 can only have 64MB so it runs out of memory pretty quick.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and then followed the Epson directions for installing the scanner. Same result. Clicking on the shortcut icon does nothing.

What control panel do you mean? I removed it through Device Manager. It's back there now and "operating properly" with "the best driver."

Do you have another computer, Mac or PC? If so, install on that and try again.

Another thing to check is the cable. If you have another USB-A to USB-B cable, try swapping it out.

Another thing to check is the USB port on the computer. Can you connect the scanner to a different USB port? I've seen port assignment issues on Windows PCs, but never on Macs unless the port itself was damaged (broken solder connection to the motherboard of a laptop).

Did anything else in your system go haywire after the power outage?

Yes, I do have another PC setup, but un-routing the wires and setting it up again is beyond what I want to do right now. I think that will be the next step, though.

Nothing else gave me problems when the power failed.

Thanks
