This is an odd one. We lost power today, and I didn't realize it, so the computer shut down when the battery backup died. Power came back a couple of hours later, and I tried to scan something with my Epson Perfection V600. The Epson scanning software won't start. It's on the computer, but clicking on it does nothing. I was not using this software when the power went out.

I went to the Epson site and downloaded their new version of the software. After going through the setup procedure, I scanned a couple of pages (PDF). Each file is 4kb in size, but the page is totally blank. Now, neither version of the scanning software opens. I uninstalled and reinstalled the scanner. Now, neither version of the software will start. The computer sees the scanner, and it says the driver is okay, and the scanner is operating properly.

Any ideas?

There may have been some degree of serge associated with the power going out. This possibly affected you scanner, not the actual software. I would unplug the scanner and see if the software will boot up.

Thanks. It was turned off at the time, and I did unplug and re-plug the scanner. If I can find the original disk that came with the scanner, I'll reinstall it.

I keep my printer/scanner turned off until such a time I want to use them. If I start the scanner software and the device is turned off it will tell me there is no scanner available. I thought the software may be looking for the machine as part of the boot up process. Other than that, I don't know what would block the software from starting.

Right. Even if the scanner is turned on but not yet ready to go, the software tells me it can't find the scanner. In this case, clicking on the scanning icon does nothing at all.

Download and install VueSan as a trial and see if it finds your scanner.

Have you tried Epson's Printer Connection Checker? I've used that a number of times to resolve both printer and scanner issues. You might give it a try.

That's an idea.

All it would do is check the 970, which is working fine. It didn't see the scanner, although Device Manager says it's working fine.

First, uninstall the SW. Then, go to control panel and under imaging devices, uninstall the scanner, finally go to USB devices and uninstall and remove the USB device associated with the scanner (important). After all this is done, shut down the computer completely and then restart. Install the SW and when prompted plug in and turn on the scanner - you should get a notice that a new device has been added.

I installed VueScan - nothing about a trial. I clicked on Scan, and I'm still waiting for it to finish. It found the V600, which is also known as the GT-X820, and both model names displayed. After nothing happened, I clicked on Cancel and then on Preview. It's stalled there, too.

The blue light on the scanner is blinking, and there's an hourglass on my VueScan screen. Both those activities stopped, so I turned the scanner off and on and clicked on Scan again. I have the spinning lines on the VueScan screen. No extra lights on the scanner.

I canceled the scan again. This is a dead end. Maybe I'll just buy a new scanner.

"Give up"? That's one of many terms I do not know.
