It's not just you, it felt pretty weird for me as well. If your frame it in the context that we made it back, it kind of takes the edge off. But I think people struggle for something else to say. It is kind of like the thorn in my side of someone saying thank you for your service, it sure wasn't that way when I got back. I just kind of roll with it because most will never understand...

When someone says " Thank you for your service " the first thing I would really like to say is Fk U it's to late but I don't. I can count all the people who have said it on one hand and the first one was 40 plus years to late. Don't mean Sht. US Naval station Brooklyn, USS Sperry AS12, USS IWO JIMA LPH2 , 67-71

I cringe inside when someone says “Thank you for your service” or “Welcome home” especially if they are so young their parents weren’t even born yet when I got back. I know they mean well, but the time that should have come was a long time ago.

Thanks so much. It’s nice to be recognized for our service. Back when I was serving it was advised not to wear our uniforms in public because of the hostility toward the military. I’m glad America citizens now recognize our sacrifices. US Air Force 1966-1970.

...yeah, the "TYFYS" gets to me, too, but "Welcome Home" from a VN vet is extra special and always engenders a handshake and chuckle (one of those "whew" things)...

I use my veteran's discounts at least every week or two, the salespeople always say that. At first I had no idea what to say. Now, i simply say, you are welcome.

I often say, "Thank you. It was an honor and privilege to serve."
