I was on the Seabee Drill Team, Navy Public Affairs, spring of 1969 - fall of 1970. We did tours all over the eastern U.S., along with the Blue Angels. We also did numerous bicentennial celebrations throughout New England. In the larger cities, we sometimes heard some really nasty stuff, but when we got to the smaller New England towns, we were treated like heroes. We would do the parades and drill routines, and every town we visited provided food and drink when we finished our details at the town halls. Our money was never good in those towns, and our wives would go with us and enjoy the hospitality. When we finished, and left to go back to Rhode Island, we were given bags of groceries, and even some cash. At first we tried to refuse, but the folks there loved the military, and most of the men were veterans of WWII and Korea. We'd get the occasional $10 or $20 bill telling us it was for gas, groceries, etc. I'm from the South, but New England hospitality was never anything to sneeze at.
