I have a question for all you DSLR users, when you buy a DSLR, do you automaticly get an all purpose lens for general shooting or is the price for body only and you pick out and pay for the lens you want? Some higher end mega zoom point & shoot cameras cost as much as an entery level DSLR

It depends where you buy it. Best Buy sometimes comes with 2 lenses. shop around and definately go to a camera shop and look and get the feel of the cameras. There is a lot to choose from and all have different features. Look at the reviews as well. I know people love Ken Rockwell however there are other sites. Keep in mind a tripod is an essential piece of equipment.
It took me a month and made my decision because American of Madison had the D3100 on sale for $400. It is small though and I have small fingers plus I was able to get the extra batteries and grip and filters through amazon for under $100.00 so for me it was a win win..
Good Luck and happy hunting

Depends. I researched a lot and picked a specific lens. Avoided the kit lens. Generally, they are made with more plastic and do not hold up as well.

I liked the Nikon D-3000 when it first came out, untill I found out it doesn't have live view on the rear LCD screen, you aways have to use the eye viewer to frame your pics. To me, that was the deal breaker.

Thats a downside for the D3100. It has liveview but you need to pull down a little lever on the back and it is too much of a pain. I really do not miss it though I like actually looking through the viewfinder.
There are going to be pros and cons to every camera I suppose it's whatever fits your needs and makes you comfortable.

That's right, no one camera is perfect for everyone. On the one hand, I like the mega zooms that are on the market, their not as big as a DSLR but image quality on most of them arn't what they could be. On the other hand, you can't beat the image quality of a DSLR. One good thing is more manufacturers are putting CMOS sensors into their cameras, even the low end ones

Get the D3100! The main advantage of a DSLR in taking pictures of kids is the focus speed. You won't miss all of the pictures you did with the Coolpix. You can put the D3100 on full auto and get great pictures. External Nikon flashes are worth the money. If you want a more versatile lens, go to a local camera shop and buy the body with a zoom lens with a wider range.
