I currently own a Nikon Coolpix L110 and love the pics it takes. I've been checking out the Nikon D3100 but would like to know the pros and cons in comparison from my current L110. It seems that my people pics really are bad, (then again I don't like taking the time with people pics either, getting my grandkids to sit still, smile normally, ect... just frustrates me) but sunsets, insects, flowers are great. Any comments will be appreciated as I don't know much about camera's but love getting a cool pic every now and then.

I just bought a Nikon 7000; my friend just purchased a 3100. The new generation sensors on the Nikons are amazing! You can boost the ISO and get excellent images without using the flash or tripod. The many focus points (even on the less expensive 3100) allow you to take perfect photos.

Well, At work we use Nikon D3000 but I've never used a 3100. The 3000s are great user friendly cameras and the people shots come out great, sharp, nice color etc but I have found that they are not fast enough to shoot faster moving objects like a parade or band. By fast enough I mean Frames Per Second or maybe it doesn't process the shots fast enough for my taste. For those shots I still use the nikon D50, I own my own D90 which is faster still.
The 3100 may be faster but if you want a nice camera that takes great family shots I'd say the 3100 should be a good choice.

I got Nikon D 5100 a little over a week ago for a gift. I came from the Point and shoot world which is horrible once u get your hands on a DSLR! I am very new and have a lot to learn but in the short time I have been able to do so much more with a DSLR. I am already looking forward to get a new lens. That is a big difference in getting a DSLR camera- So many options! Its a little over whelming at first but i got a few books and am learning by the day. After a week of the DSLR I could never go back to a point and shoot! You can checkout some of my pics if you are interested at http://www.flickr.com/photos/heidionefligrl/

Hope this helps :)

I have a D3000 and I like it but I think that I am going to outgrow it fairly fast.
Here is a comparison between the two.

Go to KenRockwell.com. He has a great review of the D3100. He says that unless you have a specfic reason to buy the higher priced cameras it's the one to get. I got a CoolpixL110 on eBay $12 with postage and its a great little camera. If you want enlargments of your pictures the D3100 will be night and day differance but with just 4X6 prints on looking on the computer you point and shoot well do fine. As for the pics of your grandchildren the camera will not help a great deal unless you work on composition ,posing, lighten, etc. etc. While you are diciding work on these things with your coolpix and you may surprise yourself. - Dave

I have, and absolutely love my D80. With it, I have: 105 2.8 prime; 85 1.8 prime; 70-200 2.8; 17-50 2.8; and 18-200 2.8. I use the 18-200 zoom quite a bit and the 105 for my macro shots. Adding the dual-battery pack makes the body fit my hand so much nicer. My buddy has the D5100 and it is way too small for my hand (and I'm not a big guy). Here are a couple of my macro shots.

Hi Cindy, your going from a Coolpix L 110 to a Nikon 3100 DSLR, that's a big price jump, a L110 go's for about $250 and a 3100 go's for about $500 and their two completly differnt cameras. The L 110 is a regular point & shoot with a 15X wide angle lens, a 3100 is for more advanced photographers. If you want to stay with the Coolpix series, I'd suggest you check out the Nikon Coolpix P-100 or the P-500 wich is a newer version of the P-100. Both will run you around $300 to $350. The P-100 has about a 24X lens and the P-500 has a 36X lens. Your L 110 is ok for still shots but has very little manual control. If you really want to jump to a 3100, go ahead but it might be better to go for a higher end Coolpix. Hope this helps.

You just answered your own question, how will buying a more expensive camera make you a better photographer?? It won't.You don't like taking pictures of people so how will a new camera change that?? Read 'Beyond Portraiture' by Bryan Peterson for about $20 and become better at photographing family members and save the other $1500 for a Vacation and take more photos. Just my Opinion.

I am still trying to X-over from years of "film fun" I use the Nikon D90. I found it easy to use. And fun to learn on. Not the top of the line for Nikon just a good sturdy camera that takes my beating and keeps on clicking. I suggest you take a look at Flick'r and see some of the other Nikon photo samples.. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for you opinions and suggestions, also the websites for comparisons. I'm considering my other options before buying anything for right now. Maybe Santa will make my decision for me! (Hubby Hint!) This is a great place to get info from fellow camera buffs, it was my first time using this. CJ

I have the D3100, I love it. I also purched extra batteries and camera grip and filters at amazon.com. If you have larger fingers the D90 may be a better fit. With the D3100 there are all kinds of extra features (like video) but you definately need a tripod.
You may want to go to a camera shop and look at all your possabilities since your camera should last a few years and try upgrading to a camera where you can use the accessories.
Good luck
