Well, it's government run. I know, I know, they "claim" the USPS is private, only government regulated. Well, the next time your mail carrier goes by, get the tag number. What's that you say? No tag?
Look closely. That mail carrier truck not only doesn't have a tag, there's not even a tag mounting bracket or a light. Try that with any other private company. Vehicles specifically designed without a place to mount a license plate, and operated daily with no tags or registrations.
So my point is, if you want anything to be screwed up and inefficient, put the government in charge

So bad that it is incomprehensible! I worked summers at a US Post Office while I went to college. The highest "honor" I received while working there over 3 years, was to be allowed to deliver the registered mail one time. It was considered the most important mail and one speedily delivered letters that were sent by registered mail. So when I decided to mail a substantial check to a travel agent in Canada, I decided to send it registered mail with the USPS. This letter was going from San Francisco to Toronto, Canada. It was mailed on Oct. 12, at 10:15am (it is tracked) and I paid $21 for postage. Where is it now, almost 3 weeks later? In Los Angeles!! Anyone have a guess on when it might arrive at its location in Toronto, Canada?
Bottom line, if you want something to get to its destination, do not use the US Postal Service!

There’s no excuse for this kind of service when you paid that much in postage, but I seldom write checks and mail them anymore. Just about anything can be paid online.
Bill
Imagine if they had to pay property taxes or vehicle taxes and so on. They already loss millions per month

During the Pandemic, the USPS would not deliver for 3 or 4 days at a time. I called our local Post Office to try and find out when the next delivery would be but know one would answer the phone. My neighbor is the Post Master at a different office so I talked to him to see if he could get an answer. He said that he had tried to call and they wouldn't answer his calls either even when he called through the Postal system.
For some reason mail from the U.S. to Canada takes forever. You can probably get it there faster by walking it.
I don't know how the US one is, but the Canadian one is slow, and fairly reliable. The 'tracking number' system cannot be beat. It's incredibly good. When I was younger I could send a letter, to anywhere in Canada, and it would usually arrive the next day, or the day after... now it takes a week or so.

I hear you. I recently send an important document registered mail(return receipt requested) so that someone would have to sign for it thus giving me proof that I sent it. Well, the receipt did come back to me, but with no ones signature on it!A waste of almost $20.
Now for that I would have filed a complaint with the Postmaster General!!
The fact that I can put a letter in a box on my front lawn in California and it will be delivered to a friend's box on his lawn in Iowa in a few days, has always impressed me. There may be a few misses but it is a great service.

Indeed, I did file a complaint at the P.O. where I made the purchase, never heard back! Probably shouldn't have filed with them.

All mailing services have Hubs. Thus the shipments seem to take crazy routes. Was your Registered Priority or Express Mail. Three weeks is a long time for even Media Rate. Mailing Labels get damaged too and they have to figure out how to address a new one before it can move on. I've received packages with nearly destroyed labels, no idea how they got it to me.
For $21, there should be some kind of money back guarantee time/date of delivery to keep them honest.

Yep, thanks for the comment!
What's stunning to me is that in this day and age, someone is actually writing a check and sending it via mail. I don't even know where my checkbook is, or even if I still have a checkbook.
