Some cameras have 2 card slots with the same type of card in each.
I download a card to my computer, verify it is downloaded and do the following:
take the second card out move it from slot 2 to slot 1.
Take the former slot 1 card and put into slot 2.
Then reformat both cards.
This way each slot is being used equally.
Works for me and who knows if necessary but that is what I wanted to do.
Do others do something different?
I know that those with 2 different types of cards cannot do this so they do not need to comment.

While as you pointed out many cameras support two different kinds of cards, even for bodies which have identical card slots I fail to see any practical advantage to swapping them.

Of course its my opinion. In your original post, you asked for what we do when we have two card slots. On my cameras with two identical card slots I always left one card in a slot fairly permanently, and just removed the other card when needed. I used the permanently installed 2nd card as a backup of the first and captured fine large jpegs and raw files to both. If you are happy with your approach, by all means continue doing it. I just don't see any advantage to it.

Mainly the physical removing and inserting equally as well.

So with your method:

1) remove card 1
2) remove card 2
3) insert card 2 in the card 1 slot
4) insert card 1 in the card 2 slot

So that’s an insertion and a deletion for card each card - 4 total

What, if since the same data is on each card, just remove and download alternate cards. That way there would equal wear on each socket/card and only half the insertions/removals.

The Z9 is similar in that it has two identical CFExpress slots.

My flow differs in a few ways, largely a result of the 20fps capability of the camera, which I use extensively for birding:

1) I use the second slot for overflow

2) I have no need or desire to keep all my shots. After a session, I use Photo Mechanic to select the images that I want to process, maybe 5% at most. These go onto two external hard drives, cloud backup, etc.

3) If the primary card has space on it, it goes back into the first slot, and is used until the shots overflow onto the second card. After selecting the shots I want, this card gets reformatted. The second card moves up to become the primary, and the reformatted card becomes the overflow.

Whatever works for you.

Thx for sharing your system of usage.
Very helpful in seeing what others do.
This is my 1st camera with dual cards of the same type.
Again, greatly appreciated.

Not so with my D850.1 sd slot and 1 xqd/ compact flash. I write jpg to both cards or can fill each card In turn. I never take my cards out but download with a cable. I don't like all that wear and tear on the contacts. I also incured. a $$$ repair when the sd card didn't go in correctly.

I used to leave a second SD 256 gig card in my R5 until it filled (as a backup) and only use the primary CF Express for downloading regular jobs until I noticed the camera lagging on startup. I assume the camera has to sort through and calculate the total before it can fully engage. I stopped doing it and now just format both cards before every job.
