Friends, thank you for all your suggestions, but I just solved the problem. I was given the wrong #2 fob for my car when I bought it from the dealer just over a year ago! I took the physical (valet) key out of the fob, and it doesn't work in my car door! It doesn't even look like the #1 key! I could have sworn that we had used that fob before now, but obviously not. Thanks again for trying!

I'm hoping some of you tech types might be able to help me. One of the remote keys for my 2022 Honda CR-V just stopped working a couple of days ago. I've replaced the battery with a new one, but it still doesn't work. It hasn't been dropped or immersed, and is seldom used. The local dealer's parts department tells me that these keys "don't just lose programming." Three local locksmiths have no other ideas than replacing the key. I'm still hoping to avoid that. Any ideas? TIA!

My wife lost a CRV key a few years ago and I was able to get it "cloned " at a Mister Minit stall ( they do shoe repairs , watch batteries, door openers etc ). Two weeks alter we found the original.

Not quite the same situation but I recently put my newer CRV key through the washing machine. It works fine and did not even short out the battery! You win some and lose some.

Check on-line for a replacement key, you will have to have it programed at a dealer since you only have one key, but it is a lot cheaper than buying the key at the dealer, I have done this after losing a key for my Dodge grand caravan. $375 at the dealer, on line $50 plus $75 at the dealer to program it.

If you suspect your battery stop stuffing around with all this stupid guessing. Get a voltmeter and measure it. A typical good/new battery should be around 3.35 volts. A stuffed battery (this means one that totally doesn't work at all) is usually around 2.6-2.9 volts. If you read say 3.2v then you know your battery is almost out. After finding this out and shoving in a new battery (also volts tested) and it still doesn't work then go through the cleaning contacts path. There is one point to keep in mind. The battery can still read 3.3 volts but not work because the application of any load can cause the voltage to drop below the working level. This is because at no load the voltage rises and with a high impedance voltmeter it has so little load on the battery that it can still show as being okay. You soon learn to tell the difference.
Note that the batteries used in fobs have a very long shelf life (if stored correctly) so you don't buy one but get two/three, measure them both, insert one and you then have a good spare. The fob will use up its battery long before the spares shelf life will expire. Which you will measure before using anyway as a check in case you had a spare which went faulty during storage (happens very rarely BUT it can happen). And buy a good known brand like Panasonic for example.
Key fobs are like printer ink to their respective manufacturers.

Simplest thing to do if inserting a new battery(ies) doesn't work.
Most electronics are no longer repaired nowadays, simply replaced, it's cheaper.

Some of these are like $300 each.

Not sure if this is good advice, but I had an issue with a key fob that would not work. I bought new metallic connectors and it worked. I took out the old one, laid in the new one and it worked. Not sure if this will help but it worked for me.

This car should still be under warranty. Not sure if your warranty covers the fob, but it is certainly worth checking. At the very least, the dealer may have some trick to get the fob working again. I would start there.

They don't lose their programming. They stop transmitting. The smart key, if it has one, will still work. I recently had the same issue with one of the fobs for my Genesis. Dealers get an arm and a leg for a replacement but Amazon (naturally) carries OEM and aftermarket ones for MUCH less. Any decent locksmith can program the new fob and cut a new key. (Key blanks come with them. And you will still have the old smart key as a backup. )

Go to a Honda Dealer and ask them to reset the key inside the car. I have a Ford Fiesta and the same thing happened to me. There was a simple action that one of the mechanics knew - it involved putting the key in the ignition and turning it on and off a few times which reset the key fob. I expect that can be done with other makes.
