In 1967 as a high school freshman I had joined the high school rifle club with weekly practices.
Firearm safety, cleaning, and marksmanship were actually being taught in school !!
I carried my dad's (actually my grandfathers) bolt-action .22 rimfire rifle ON THE SCHOOL BUS.
OK - I had to sit in the back of the bus. Hey - no problems !! Nobody bothered me :) :)
And - I was a pretty good shot - open iron sights. And - yep - this was in connecticut !!
I will avoid further comment regarding that state to stay out of the attic.
Needless to say - I now live in the free state of Texas and have no reason to go back to CT.

In 1963/64 several of us attending the University of Illinois were on break driving to Northern Florida to go cave diving in the springs and sinkholes. One of our party was a grad student in biology, and he had an SLR mounted on a rifle stock with a fairly long telephoto lens. We were in avRalph Nader special Chevy Corvair and there wasn’t an inch of spare room, so the camera rig was wrapped in an army blanket and laying in the rear window… long story-short; we were pulled over in Georgia for traveling while Yankees with Illinois plates and by the time the deputy got to the driver’s window his gun was out and he was doing his best impression of the typical LEO doing “You’re in a heap of trouble boys….” By the time his backup arrived he was enjoying us being contrite and well mannered and having a laugh with his buddies. Fun in the south during the peak of the civil rights era. (The diving was terrific and at times chocked full of doses of terror.) a week later four older men went back north still dumb and happy.

I'm amazed that this happened in the South at that time, where every pickup (nearly) had a rifle in a rack in the rear window.

I was carrying May folded up all black Bogen tripod with a Joystick ball head attached over my shoulder with a sling. A boy about 10 said to his father, “Dad! He has an Uzi”

Imagine back in the day nature photographers who used Gun Stock holders for long telephoto lenses. I’m sure they had the police called on them often.

Back in the early 70's my office of employment was in downtown Austin, TX. About 6 blocks from my office was a gunsmith shop. During lunch brake, I walked a Remington 700, 25-06 right through the middle of Austin to the gunsmith. I got some "looks". Otherwise, no problem.

Its sad but I agree with the people that called. If they think you have a rifle they should call.
its always better to be safe than sorry.
On the other hand, someone that thinks a camera on a tri pod is a weapon, those might be the people we should watch out for.

Since when should someone call the cops because a law abiding citizen has a rifle?

Maine has a strong hunting tradition but, this not being the wild west, most "law abiding" citizens do not walk about town toting a firearm, so a call for someone carrying a rifle is to be expected!

Please see the screenshot.

As for "law abiding" it makes sense to check the law.

I know what the law is, but that doesn't change the fact that most Mainers have enough sense not to walk around carrying a gun.

OK - - so you don't have open carry?? I'll bet you do.
No - I don't carry openly - because I don't want the bad guys to know.
But many can and do here in Texas. Open Carry is the law.
Cops have better things to do than harass people who are within their rights.
Maybe you'd feel more comfy in new jerksey?? Where only the bad guys have firearms.

I guess that's Maine. Here in Texas I saw quite a few guys standing at the highway exit ramps carrying AR-15 rifle. Nobody called the police on them I don't think.

In the majority of states, many people have enough sense to be prepared to defend themselves and their families and are allowed by law to do so. Yes, there are some, possibly such as yourself, who have a different opinion. That opinion is not, though, the law and now you say you know that. If someone thinks as you do, why would that give them the mindset to think that the other, law abiding, guy is not sensible? It's not a serious question, just a rhetorical device. The point is that asserting that the guy who calls the police about a perfectly legal action or situation is simply wasting valuable police resources.

It's even worse since the OP was merely a photographer, not, at that moment at least, carrying a rifle.

Not many people seem to have common sense anymore. If you see something you don't understand, watch and study it and whoever has control of it. If their intent is malicious they'd likely be more discreet so others couldn't see what they are doing. If I see a dark blob alongside the road I don't automatically assume it's a hydrogen bomb placed by a terrorist. In my semi-rural area, every time a car backfires someone posts on social media asking if others heard the gunshots.

Then you have to remind yourself 50% of the population has below average intelligence. Sadly I think that average intelligence of humankind is trending down possibly due to government mandated safety signs. Natural selection strengthens the gene pool. The best quote I've heard lately is: "Life is hard, if you can't handle it you should get a helmet".
