BAR HARBOR, MAINE, from the police log book:

On Thursday, September 28th, a Bar Harbor police officer responded to a report of a man with a rifle in the area of the Stone Barn on the Crooked Road. The Stone Barn is an iconic and much-photographed Mount Desert Island landmark, now owned and managed for public use by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Upon arrival, Officer Hardy determined that the man was holding a folded-up tripod!

Manche Leute sind einfach Dip-Scheiße.

Not the first time.....

I suppose it looks like a portable Gatling Gun?

Been stopped twice in urban PARKS (in the most densely populated county in Florida, with 3,491 residents per square mile.) by officers responding to reports of a man with a rifle. People mistake Canon white 300mm L Lenses for sniper gear. There is nothing so uncommon as common sense. Hypothetically, if I wanted to kill people I would perhaps go to a mall, but NOT A PARK!

Your Germanglish is FUNNY! Probably more so because it is absolutely spot on.

Ja, und gesunder Menschenverstand, wenn auch allgemein ungewöhnlich.

300mm lens is too fat to be mistaken for a sniper rifle.

Several years ago I encountered a similar situation but in New York state. I stopped at a road side rest area (limited access highway) to get some photos of the sun setting across a large lake. As I was moving my camera, mounted on an extended tripod, a short distance for a different view point, a security guard(?) approached me asking me what I was doing. When I told him, "Taking photographs of the sunset" he explained that he thought I had a rifle. Even in subdued light, a fully extended tripod certainly does not resemble a rifle, even with a DSLR and mounted zoom lens attached.

Its sad but I agree with the people that called. If they think you have a rifle they should call.
its always better to be safe than sorry.
On the other hand, someone that thinks a camera on a tri pod is a weapon, those might be the people we should watch out for.

Maybe he's never seen a tripod and has no idea what one is.

At least he knew it wasn't a giraffe....
