Even if it was a gun, I'm not sure why the cops were called. Maine is an open carry state. It is, in essence, like carrying a camera, according to the law.

Exactly. Perhaps that has something to do with the mess we’re in. :-)

The people that call in for a 'what if' situation should make sure it really could be a danger. We don't have enough police as it is without answering the silly 'what if' calls.

Several years ago I encountered a similar situation but in New York state. I stopped at a road side rest area (limited access highway) to get some photos of the sun setting across a large lake. As I was moving my camera, mounted on an extended tripod, a short distance for a different view point, a security guard(?) approached me asking me what I was doing. When I told him, "Taking photographs of the sunset" he explained that he thought I had a rifle. Even in subdued light, a fully extended tripod certainly does not resemble a rifle, even with a DSLR and mounted zoom lens attached.

I'm not sure my reply to him would have been polite or printable. If he can't tell the difference between a tripod and a rifle I would suggest that his eyesight was bad enough that he had no business being a rent-a-cop!

Not in Acadia National Park and not on private property where prohibited by the owner.

BAR HARBOR, MAINE, from the police log book:

On Thursday, September 28th, a Bar Harbor police officer responded to a report of a man with a rifle in the area of the Stone Barn on the Crooked Road. The Stone Barn is an iconic and much-photographed Mount Desert Island landmark, now owned and managed for public use by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Upon arrival, Officer Hardy determined that the man was holding a folded-up tripod!

I fully agree, and I'm happy that the call was made and that an officer responded in a timely manner. I seldom carry a tripod and was a bit surprised at this, so posted the report, but apparently it's not unheard of.

I understand that event.

And because of that, I don't carry my mini-tripod, (In it's leather case),
in my back pocket anymore.

We humanoids have been programed for fear of little black cases.

Note: maybe I'll just paint my tripod red and yellow and "open carry" it
to my next events.

No, but you said this happened in Bar Harbor. I do understand that their are restrictions to open carry.

I also don't fault police for checking on anybody carrying a rifle when not in use for hunting or any firearm when in close proximity of a school, mall or entertainment venue. However, if you will remember when five policemen were killed in Dallas, there was a protestor carrying a rifle. He was, initially, the first suspect and his photo, taken from downtown cameras, was put on television to help identify him. He was identified as the possible shooter, picked up and questioned. As it turned out, he was not, and he later made a big fuss.

As far as I'm aware the incident occurred on private property which happens to be located in the town of Bar Harbor.

You said it was in the "area" of the Stone Barn but not on the property of the Stone Barn or that that Stone Barn was posted. That would have been significant information. For instance, private property has to be posted before firearms cannot be carried.

In 1963/64 several of us attending the University of Illinois were on break driving to Northern Florida to go cave diving in the springs and sinkholes. One of our party was a grad student in biology, and he had an SLR mounted on a rifle stock with a fairly long telephoto lens. We were in avRalph Nader special Chevy Corvair and there wasn’t an inch of spare room, so the camera rig was wrapped in an army blanket and laying in the rear window… long story-short; we were pulled over in Georgia for traveling while Yankees with Illinois plates and by the time the deputy got to the driver’s window his gun was out and he was doing his best impression of the typical LEO doing “You’re in a heap of trouble boys….” By the time his backup arrived he was enjoying us being contrite and well mannered and having a laugh with his buddies. Fun in the south during the peak of the civil rights era. (The diving was terrific and at times chocked full of doses of terror.) a week later four older men went back north still dumb and happy.
