No, I can't resist. I'm the "memory keeper" in our little family of five because I choose to be. It started with my Mom who took lots of photos of me growing up and it just continued with me when I went into the service in '67, and bought a Yashica Electro 35 at the BX. Sometimes family members roll their eyes but inevitably they want to see the pictures over and over. I couldn't remember things I did and saw in Thailand and in two trips to Italy and most importantly the birth and growth of my only granddaughter, Ava, without my pictures. She's ten now, but we still look and admire shots of her growing up. Birthday parties, graduations, religious rites, family picnics, holidays...I think you get the idea...at all functions. So, you can put me in the "I prefer taking pics for posterity" column and I'll stay there until I can longer hold a camera and then Ava can take over. She's already a pretty good little photographer with her Sony A6000. As a matter of fact she took first place at the library photography contest in her age group.

Check the alarming stats on adult ADHD. This habit of recording everything or thinking that we should I believe is one on many contributing factors.

Am not usually a "CCC" (carry camera constantly) person but there are times such as below, when I just have to grab a shot. This was taken with my BIL's cell camera. Me, my sister and her husband had just attended a high school reunion and when we turned a corner going to our vehicle, saw this. It is my former high school (left), the "annex" -- Pierson Hall which was original courthouse (center) and the Congregational Church (right). When I saw it, knew I had to grab a picture (didn't have my own cell with me). It is now my Facebook cover photo and was picked up by the alumni association of the high school (which closed in 1969).

When I do have my camera it is with the intent to get pictures such as on a "hike" or traveling to a specific place/time.
Serendipity Happens....

I purposely go out now, at times, without both and what freedom.

I say "No" we don't always have to be connected. I do the same...purposely go out now, at times, without my camera and phone! Freedom indeed!

Which is why I carry a camera; I never know when serendipity will happen.

Why does “connection” have to be related to having a camera? Neither my digital camera nor my film camera connects me to the rest of the world.

I bet when you have those cameras out and about your phone is with you.

Funny, I have used those exact words. Then, after buying my wife an iPhone 13 Pro a few years back, her travel photos were turning out better than mine. This after humping all my gear on and off busses, cruise ships,
and crowded streets all over the world and at the same time missing out enjoying the sights with my wife. With her iPhone she sees a shot, shoots and is then free to enjoy the moment. I am setting up, checking my settings on the camera, trying to get the best angle, exposure, etc. By then she has moved on to other sights or even worse, if we are in a group, they have moved on leaving me to hustle to catch up.

No more. On my next trip I am carrying only my new iPhone and a small travel camera for a backup.

If they are good enough for Scott Kelby, I think they are good enough for me.

Of course - my age is over 70, and I’m not foolish {what if I have a sudden medical need?} - but there is no connection between the two concepts.

You wouldn’t have to take a perfect photo - grab and go works with a ‘real camera’ as well as with an iPhone. That was basically Weegee’s attitude when he said “F/8 and be there”.

I agree. I started doing that also for a while. That is when I noticed my wife's iPhone 13 photos were in many cases, as good or better than my shots and without all the gear.

But, one must ask, if all you are going to do is take a snapshot, then why carry all that gear? A cell phone that takes great shots can fit perfectly in your pocket or small pack and has little weight. Like any other piece of gear, learn how to use it along with its limitations and you will not be disappointed.

I guess I have become like others here. I am not giving up on using my best camera and lenses, it just means that on vacations and trips with family or friends, I will not make it a photography trip. When I want to shoot for the sake of photography it will be on my own time and at locations of my choosing. Vacation shots with family and friends are for memories and not to satisfy some photography goal or ambition. The iPhone camera meets those needs precisely.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “all the gear”. I often take ‘just’ a small bag with my small-sensored MILC Pentax Q-7. It has zoom regular and telephoto lenses, which are of much better quality than what a smart phone has, so I can take much better photos than I could with my iPhone 13. For example, I took it when I rode trains from Indiana to California to serve as our daughter’s co-driver when she returned to Indiana for new employment, and “too much stuff” would have been counter-productive. I believe it is a reasonable ‘compromise’.
