Carry a Camera

Can anyone here resist carrying a camera to an activity (Or resist using the camera in the phone) and just enjoy the view or activity by immersing themselves in the view or activity and putting it into memory with all the emotions/feelings associated with where you are and resist taking photos?
Or can you just not resist keeping glass, metal and plastic between you and what is unfolding before you?
Perhaps we become too gear involved today to actually develop memories of the moment.
I see people living every event, concert recital totally through a cellphone screen or other camera.

This is an important question. (It may even partially explain why we are as we are.) I know that my brother viewed my niece's entire growing up time through the viewfinder of two or three different video cameras. He seems to have some deep regrets now. And they don't watch the videos. She is about to be 30, by the way.

It depends. Since I almost always have my phone with me, I almost always have a camera with me. Most of the time I will use a camera to capture what is there or what is going on. Some it is a quick turn on the smartphone or camera and just take a quick shot. Sometimes there is more time to be had and the shot can be viewed creatively and shot.

Then there are times the camera cannot capture what we see. "Capturing" the scene in your memory can be more important than trying to capture it with the camera. It sometimes means more and helps one to capture the next image easier.

I CAN!!!!!
And do, often!

(But my cell is always in my back pocket,
in case I need to use the phone.)

Perhaps we need to also ask: "Do we need to be constantly connected?"
How did we ever survive without a cell phone AND a camera"
I purposely go out now, at times, without both and what freedom.

Well, I used to always have change for a phone booth..........
Now I carry a cell,
because there are no more phone booths. And I don't have to go looking for one.
My "regular" camera only accompanied me if I was on an outing to explicitly take pictures.

While I'm out, I rarely think about having the cell.
Oh, wait, my grocery list is on it.
Paper/cell, still a list, different media.

While I understand what you are saying, I can state unequivocally, that my kids are going to have years of, I remember that, moments.

I love sharing the images that I make, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing with non-family members, not only here but at work but I don't do it for ego stroking or because I think that I am missing out on the experience. My pictures also help ME to remember.

I guess that it it's a matter of perspective.

Exactly.
Some have to record everything,
others, not so much.

Remember when they didn't make phone calls and were called PDAs?

Ironically, my wife is not the most patient person when it comes to my hobby, so I seem to fall somewhere in between not getting anything and rapidly spinning the dials and praying for a decent shot.

Also, somewhat ironic is that the more money that I spend on lenses, the more tolerant she seems to become. lol

I take my camera when I "go out to shoot" otherwise it stays at home. My cell phone goes everywhere with me. I have to admit I use it more for reading than anything else. I will make/receive an occasional phone call. Taking pictures? Probably less than 50 this year.

I started my serious avocation in photography back in 1970 with a SLR and film.I was in the military, overseas in Europe, and wanted to document as much as I could because I knew I may not return. I carried my camere almost everywhere. As my life settled down and became less exciting with marriage and raising children, my interest and frequency of photography waned. Essentially I lost the exuberance to constantly carry a camera.

Now I do often carry a camera and almost always have my cell phone with me, but the cell phone is more of an after thought for getting pics. I prefer using my DSLR for the more interesting and important photos.

So to answer your question, yes, I can resist taking a photo, and enjoy the view for the view.

Lol about the military.
I got a disk camera that would fit in my boonie hat.
Got caught with it on a mission and was nearly court-martialed. I did take a few photos on bike rides around Europe but very few.

Last week I was on a cruise ship in Alaska. Some whales were busy putting on a demonstration. I left the camera alone and watched. There are plenty of whale pictures on the internet.
