Does anyone have the Samsung S23-ultra? I'm thinking of getting one mainly for its camera as my camera equipment even with just one lens is now getting to be too much for me to take on my Mt Rainier or other strenuous hikes that sometimes require some climbing over rocks. I always have my cell phone with me anyway, but I don't want to miss good shooting ops. I have several photos blown up to 30x20 hanging on my walls and look at all of them on my laptop or 60" TV. My current 3-year-old Samsung cell phone has a 48mp camera that under right conditions takes some good shots but my Canon 80D is better in many ways. Any input will be appreciated.

Hi, I have just returned from 10 weeks in Africa and can truly say that I and everyone else has been amazes at just how capable this Camera/phone is
I also took along my Canon 5dmk4 withy several lenses and truly, unless you are prepared to take the time setting up for a shoot with the DSLR and then not having it ready when you see that special shot and missing it, it certainly makes you think about the DSLR and is it worth it
I printed of 2 shots 1 of a lion and one of a lioness 1 with the camera phoine and one with the dslr and have asked several people what do they think (including some professionals) and all were astounded that the camera phone was equal to or better than the DSLR in some places The fact that it can shoot RAW and has (in my case) 1/2 terrabyte of memory makes it a very versatile unit I also like the fact that you can almost instantly send memories to friends and family back home!
I have processed 2 shots and attached them so that you can see the quality of the camera /phone

Just came from the mountains, check if you get cell service. My Samsung Note 20 takes pretty good pictures (setting to pro version)

Tom's guide gives that phone very high marks...they do accurate reviews.
Sounds like more than enough...especially since that is a 'landscape' trip.
Btw...it's also a slip and fall trip...be careful.

I have the S-22 ultra and it's camera is very very good. 128 mp. It's zoom is also good. Remember this is comparing to other phone cameras. Plus the S23 is supposedly better and if it is woe. The pics are top notch as far as color and sharpness. When in a crowd and we get a group photo some of my friends will say use his phone and he can share with us. Now I would never replace my Z9 for it...

that is because when you zooming in you are just cropping. So yeah, the phone is no good zooming in.

The OP is asking about the Samsung S23 Ultra. In typical UHH fashion, someone dragged in another model (S21FE)

Bebu, does your “cropping” comment apply only to the S21FE or does it also apply to the camera of interest to the OP, the Samsung S23 Ultra?

I’d still like to know….. are all cell phone cameras with “zoom” only cropping or do some like the Samsung S23 Ultra have an actual zoom lens? Can anyone answer that?

They are actually using a telephoto lens in there. The older models all crop to achieve...the newer ones actually have telephoto lenses built in.

Thanks! But are they actual zoom lenses with variable focal lengths?

It's not one lens that zooms...they usually utilize two or three different focal length lenses.

So it is like having two or three prime lenses...as opposed to one zoom...typically a 3X and a 10x.

Thanks for responding. My iPhone 13 Pro Max has three lenses. I thought maybe the Samsung had a real zoom lens.

They aren't there yet.

Zooms are almost always worse than primes...so they don't want to take a step backwards.
When it finally comes out...and it will...it should be what everyone wants.

In that case, I wish they wouldn’t use the term “zooming” when talking about cell phone cameras. Or at least refer to it as “digital zooming”.

It's not digital zooming...which does exist.

It's a set of individual lenses...you switch back at the press of a button.

I own a few zoom lenses (sparingly few)...I still have to do something to the lens to make it zoom.
No difference really.

It's a set of cameras actually. The S23 Ultra has a 3x and a 10x cameras. If you need something in between then it would be using the 3x then croping. As I said if the angle of view of any one of the cameras on the phone is the right one then the quality is quite good.
