Does anyone have the Samsung S23-ultra? I'm thinking of getting one mainly for its camera as my camera equipment even with just one lens is now getting to be too much for me to take on my Mt Rainier or other strenuous hikes that sometimes require some climbing over rocks. I always have my cell phone with me anyway, but I don't want to miss good shooting ops. I have several photos blown up to 30x20 hanging on my walls and look at all of them on my laptop or 60" TV. My current 3-year-old Samsung cell phone has a 48mp camera that under right conditions takes some good shots but my Canon 80D is better in many ways. Any input will be appreciated.
Do you know if you have cell phone signal up there?
I don't know about the S23-ultra, but my S21 FE is great.
No qualms at all.

Very little depending on where you are, but it's getting better. You can take photos without reception, just can't send them.
If I climb the mountain a phone that can make call is much more important than taking pictures.

What does that have to do with taking snapshots (yes, that's what they are) with it?

That's for sure. Up until recently Mt Rainier had no reception, not even within 20 miles of the park entrance. Now Verizon has added towers. The last time I hiked down in the Grand Canyon there was also no reception except at the top. Hopefully that has changed. The hike back up isn't easy, even after a good nights sleep at Phantom Ranch.

Thanks, hopefully they've even improved since then.

Is that maybe because it's "not a real camera"?
It'll be good for snapshots. It can't do what a DSLR or new mirrorless can do but it's a hell of a lot lighter. The compromise is probably worth it in this case.
I don't think the OP is interested in taking 'snapshots' (my definition, 'a photo taken with little thought').
Ive seen cell phone pics on UHH that are just as good 'artistically', or better, than many taken with high end gear. Maybe they don't enlarge or are as sharp as some try to emulate with big heavy equipment but any camera is only as good as the brain in charge of the shutter.
My wife and I both currently have Samsung s23 ultras. While I rarely use the onboard camera, my wife does quite often. These take very good photos, and the general consensus on the internet (for what it's worth), is that it is far superior photographically at least for stills, to the latest Iphone 15 promax. This particular phone also wins out over the previous samsung phones we had, and is capable of taking some very fine photos. The iphone may have an edge on video, but that's something I don't as yet have any skill or knowledge about. Bear in mind that if you get a new just released iphone, I believe that they have an emergency satellite ability, which does not need a cell signal. It will allow you to automatically or manually send an emergency text with gps location attached.
My advise would be to go on utube and watch some comparison reviews. They both have their strongpoints, but for photos I'd go with the S23 ultra, especially if your household is PC oriented, not Apple.
I found cell phones are very good if the angle of view of the shot is what you want.
I bought the S23 Ultra for several reasons.
1] Larger screen, for my old poor eyes. Larger keyboard.
2] Longer Battery life.
3] Larger storage.
4] Camera lens for a beautiful wide angle.
5] Camera zoom up to 100mm. Oh yes, you better be on a tripod.
6] Low light is very good.
7] I was able to purchase the S23 Ultra for $11.xx per month plus received for Free S23 for my wife.
