I for one have been drawn into this thread out of genuine concern for what is happening to a country that I love and respect and not out of malice.

I think that you can do just about anything with statistics depending upon what point you want to make. However on every level of measurement the US comes out way ahead of other industrialised, modern, stable democracies. There are many countries with higher murder rates but we are talking about 3rd world countries mainly in South/Central America and Africa.

To compare just two US and UK:

Murder rate per 100,000 population

UK 1.2
US 4.2

Gun related deaths per 100,000

UK 0.04
US 9.20

Data Wikipedia. Year 2011

As far as mass shooting events are concerns the US leads the world. I doubt if anyone would argue that was not the case.

I recognise that the UK is a violent place. But it tends to be the result of drink fuelled lawlessness. If you don't put yourself in that situation you are not at risk. I sleep very soundly because I have little or no fear of being broken into.

London officials are mostly concerned with gang related violence which is on the rise. Hopefully with the UK restrictions on firearms these gang members will be unable to get their hands on them because if they get them you can bet they'll use them.

Don't cherry pick numbers...If you are going to compare murder rates, you have to do it by all sources, not just guns....Here's a link to a wiki on rates for different countries around the world. Seems the US isn't anywhere near the top in overall murder rates...

Good link. I don't think I'll be heading to Africa anytime soon after looking at the numbers. Or El Salvadore.
I was surprised to see the Bahamas ranked so high.

Yes and your next use of firearms was to commit complete genocide of the native population. How many of your "democratic" leaders have been assasinated because someone didn't like the way the vote went? In the UK we understand history because unlike the US, we actually have one.

That's funny. The USA doesn't have a history? What about kicking some British ass and gaining independence? Oh, lets not forget saving your ass from Hitler. Minor details I know. And weapons got the job done. Kiss the Queen for me.

If you're still in the room it's the present. Very good use of the "Queen's English." I didn't realize you were part of the Royal family. You are now to be known as the Duke of Farts.

Now we argue the definition of history, sheesh. Look at 4b. Your fart was history. This definition should be relatively easy to comprehend. Now take your feet out of your mouth, kindly.

I think you will find that recent case-law has established that UK householders do have rights in respect of dealing with armed intruders. I don't know how the US legal code operates but here in the UK laws can, in effect, be changed overnight and without lengthy parliamentary procedures when the Courts establish new principles from cases in process - the Common Law in action.

Hi British citizens,
You can't dictate to a country that is out of your jurisdiction. You have no rights and no leverage over the mindset. It's frustrating yes but all as you will achieve is higher blood pressure and a totally unnecessary and unfounded dislike for your cousins. We don't want that. A Scottish chap had a real go at me the other day reading someone else's post.....it can be too easy to blame on a forum and fuel non-necessity.
I saw the first of the funerals today, little girl and a smashing little chap. Oh boy..... something needs to change but UHH isn't it.

You are correct of course. I allowed myself to be side tracked by an inconsequential point of semantics. But having given that definition, may I ask how you would differentiate between a news channel on TV and a history channel.
