Thanks for the suggestions. My D500 has an articulated LCD that helps. One of the problems is that at the sun is so bright during that time of day it washes out the picture on the screen. I am experimenting with a black cloth to lessen the washout effect and am practicing already.

Much harder than I imagined!
Keeping sun centered while almost overhead even with swing out screen not easy.
Several errors so far, should have used higher ISO, wish Z fc had cable release
Nikon Z Fc, Sigma 150-600 at 600, Sigma TC 1401 tele extender tripod and Thousand oaks 95 mm film filter, full frame not cropped
Shot at ISO 100 f/9 1/60 manual exposure autofocus ( lens goes past infinity at stop)
Dallas : not quite clear ski
I think spots are solar spots, they show on all frames
Please let me know your thoughts and plans for next eclipses

I'm in Mansfield and used a D300s for the 2016 eclipse here. I ended up reclining in a lawn chair and hand holding for that one.

Guess that if you use fast enough shutter a litttle tripod shake won’t hurt
Yesterday able to frame with sun almost overhead using Z fc swing out screen
A problem will be rapidly changing exposure as it gets darker Plan to shoot only sun
Anyone who has tried to capture funny shadows as it darkens? In 1958 eclipse ( Santiago Chile) folliage acting as pinhole camera projected tiny images of occulting sun on the ground

Thanks. I am coming from Florida. We are flying in on Saturday staying in a VRBO near Love Airport. The rest of the group goes home Tuesday and my husband and I are making our way south to Ft worth, and San Antonio for the rest of the week. I drove thru Texas in 2015 and went to Big Bend Nat Park and then up to Albuquerque. I have not spent time in Texas otherwise.
I appreciate the help offered.

You need to post the picture with download so that we can get a better look at the sunspots. For the annular eclipse, there won't be much detail to be seen other than the shape of the sunspots on an orange disc. Even at annular, it will still be an orange disc with a black center with not much detail. I've taken sunspot pictures hand-held with 300 mm lens. If you set a high enough ISO, you can do it hand-held. Autofocus has no problem focusing on the sun through a filter. You've got plenty of time prior to the eclipse to practice, to perfect your technique. A total solar eclipse is a different matter. You do need a tripod to get details in the corona. I would also recommend finding a place with as much open sky as possible for next spring's total eclipse. That's because the eclipse is more than just the sun and the corona. The sky is jet black immediately around the sun, but the sky gets greyer the farther from the sun. At the horizon it's like a 360 degree sunset which is very cool. You can also see stars and planets as well near the sun.

Are you exposing your camera to the sun without a filter? Comments about washing out picture on screen suggest that. You could be damaging your sensor in the camera which would be big bucks to fix. Never point an unfiltered camera with telephoto lens at the sun. If you use telephoto in your cell phone it could damage that sensor too.

This is how much occultation we saw in Horseshoe bay TX
Not as much as I wished for.
Very clear day.
Quality of light changed, shadows became very sharp, in many you could see sun projected as crescent above.
Nikon ZFc Sigma 150-600;@ 600 mm, Sigma 1.4 teleconverter = 1275mm
ISO 2000 1/640 f/9 exposure -1.3 medium weight tripod
Solar plastic filter trimmed

Any hoggers had better occultation?
