We have an annular solar eclipse coming up so started to practice.
Much harder than I imagined!
Keeping sun centered while almost overhead even with swing out screen not easy.
Several errors so far, should have used higher ISO, wish Z fc had cable release
Nikon Z Fc, Sigma 150-600 at 600, Sigma TC 1401 tele extender tripod and Thousand oaks 95 mm film filter, full frame not cropped
Shot at ISO 100 f/9 1/60 manual exposure autofocus ( lens goes past infinity at stop)
Dallas : not quite clear ski
I think spots are solar spots, they show on all frames
Please let me know your thoughts and plans for next eclipses
Yep, there be sunspots :-)
I have a telescope with an equatorial mount and a solar filter for it. Iβve seen sunspots just like you have.
Iβm inspired to mount my camera again as the last time I tried there were no spots and all I had was a boring orange disk.
Very cool - thanks for sharing!
Your efforts paid off. Looking forward to your eclipse shots.

Very nice Sun image with Sun Spots. Thanks for sharing!
I have some images of last Sun eclipse on 8/21/2017, I used three different cameras that were all mount on a tripod. My cameras are Nikon Df with a 35mm lens; Nikon D200 with a 75-200mm lens and Panasonic super-zoom FZ-50.
Here are the images:
All of them were taken with multiple images and then pasted together in one single image. I used thousand oak filter, the third one was intentional converted to B&W. All the images were not as clear as I expected because of the appearance of the light-cloud that moved in and out of view during the time lap of several minutes each!
Wow! Like idea may extra solar filters
Total eclipse due in Texas next April
This is so helpful. I have plans and reservations to come to Dallas for the eclipse. I am with my family. They are thinking to go to the Dallas Zoo. They went to the Nashville Zoo during the last solar eclipse and studied the effects on the animals. Do you think there will be a good spot for me to set up my tripod(s) at the Zoo?
I bought the solar film, I am using a Nikon D500 PF on either a Nikon D500 (Dx) or a Nikon D850 (Fx). I appreciate any suggestions. I have not done this before.
Either the Dallas or Fort Worth zoos are fun! Both are large so you should find plenty of space
Note that Sun will be almost at Zenith Do your cameras have pull out screens? Need that or a very flexible neck ( mine too stiff to use)
It would be interesting to watch animals
I saw an almost complete eclipse in Santiago Chile 1958, street lights came on , almost completely dark, dogs went crazy howling.
Yes Both cameras have pull out screens. I am thinking that the Dallas Zoo may be closer to the path of the eclipse than the Ft Worth Zoo which appears to be west of Dallas. Am Incorrect in thinking this ?
See map, 2023 is tract NW to SE
Dallas and Ft Worth both are about the same position , better for 2024 total eclipse than for 2023
A lot depends on cloud cover
Donβt mention the βCβ word.
If someone would buy my plane ticket to Texas, I would bring my 100% cloudless record to every solar eclipse event I've attended to help keep the clouds away.
The October,2023 annular eclipse will only be a partial eclipse in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The annular part will not be visible here but will be visible in west and southwest Texas. The April, 2024 eclipse will be a full eclipse in the DFW area. I am also practicing and find it hard to acquire an image when the sun is directly overhead. I'm using a D500, a Nikkor 200-500, a special filter that I used in 2016 for that eclipse. The camera is mounted on a very sturdy tripod and I am using a Benro geared head. I will be in the Texas Hill country for the full effect of the October eclipse. Anybody have any suggestions about how to acquire an image of the overhead sun during an eclipse?
Preferably get a camera that has a flip out screen that rotates. If you practice focusing on the sun when it isn't directly over head and tape your focus ring so it won't move, that should get you pretty close for the actual event.
