I bought a very expensive Olympus 15-35mm f:2 lens for an E-5 4/3 camera about 16 years ago. When I tried to use it on anything less than a full battery charge the camera would shut down rather than take a photo. I could take about three photos on a full charge, then it would fail.
I called Olympus service and was told that, for such a big lens, I needed a battery grip. I then bought the grip and additional batteries. It took a while to get them because they were backordered. It didn't solve the problem at all. I called Olympus service again. They then told me that the warranty had expired and that it would cost almost $400.00 to get it repaired. I explained the whole history of the situation and they were unmoved. It still cost almost $400.00 plus shipping and insurance to get a $2,400.00 lens fixed that had never worked.
At that point I was done with Olympus and moved to Canon.
I have been shooting for 40 years, and I still have all the cameras that I have used. They all work.
I have never had to get any body repaired, or cla’d.
I live 20 minutes from Nikon in Melville, and if needed they are conveniently located.
Bottom line:
“If it ain’t broke,
Don’t fix it”
And, the sensor doesn’t need annual cleanings. Only if it’s in need of it. And, ftr, I recently gave my 5 year old D850, to my son in law, with over 200,000 clicks, and it has never had the sensor cleaned, because it never needed it!!
I am loving the z9! (I had to wait for the z8 to realize that the z9 was the right body for me)

Hello Hoggers,
How often do you send out your camera for routine maintenance? I've had my D750 for 6 years now and haven't sent it out yet, but I have had the sensor cleaned annually. Nothing is wrong with it but I'm just wondering.
Thanks,
Dennis

I have cameras that I got 20 years or more ago and still function properly that have never been sent out for routine maintenance. I have had cameras sent for repairs once or twice when a repair is needed. Normal cleaning and such I do for myself.
I can see where a person is a professional photographer, and their ability to support themselves and their families depend on their cameras, would be much more likely to send their cameras out routinely.

Not the best story, but a happy ending.

In 50 years I've never sent one out for anything.
I think about 25 years for my film cameras before I retired them.
I keep them clean (they store in a camera case) and they've always worked fine.
Still thinking the same way, just not 50 years. 18 for me.
Don’t fix what is not broke.

NEVER. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I have never sent in a camera for "maintenance" unless I knew I had a real problem. When I went digital, I have used a local repair shop to clean my sensors.

My oldest body is from 2012 and it has never been sent out for service. I clean my sensor whenever it needs it.
