According to a report by Statista1, there were about 5.22 billion unique mobile phone users in the world as of January 2021, compared to about 1.43 billion digital camera users in 2022. This means that phone manufacturers have more potential customers and more incentive to invest in research and development of new features and technologies for their devices"

Phones keep getting better and many are cheaper, the flagship phones continue to be the most expensive. I'm not getting rid of my Canon 90D and lenses but I'm very hesitant to change when really our newest cameras all brands are living in old technology compared to phones. In 1980 cell phones were a huge brick, with no text, no camera and they were dumb as a brick but they were a mobile phone. I read that the first shared cell phone pic was in 1997. Maybe the dates and info are off but the cameras we know and love/hate are falling behind and it doesn't appear that the big companies care or have a plan to meet the challenge. What are your thoughts?

But they have, in their own needs.
They have too, to keep up with competitions.
A celphone vs dedicated camera comparison is pretty much the same as Jpeg vs Raw.
One is a general purpose king, the other is a specialists tool.
So the answer to both is the same; They answer to a different question so there really is no comparison between them and reason to divide. Depending on the purpose & circumstance, one will be better than the other.

…here is a simple one…does anyone own a camera that can shoot a panoramic photo like a smart phone can…?

I still can, and do, use the Rolleiflex TLR my dad bought in the 1950s.

Will your mobile phone, with all its “advanced technology” be useable in 70 years?

Why does the post above seem so familiar? I can get a pretty good image with my SmartPhone. I have been using APS-C digital cameras for years. But recently I purchased a FF digital camera. The images are incredible and I can't put it down. I have not used my other cameras or phone much since. If I had the money I would go for a 100MP Digital Medium Format Camera.

Actually any Digital Camera can be used to manually shoot a panorama with processing in Photoshop or other PP software. Many photographers create huge stitched panoramas using Wide Angle to Normal to Telephoto Lenses and the images can be stitched to produce images of many hundreds of MPs and several GBs! And it is my understanding that some regular, especially mirrorless (MILC) cameras can do in-camera Panoramas. Examples: Sony A7C, Canon EOS R7, Fujifilm X-T4.

My thoughts are people like convenience first and put quality down the list. It is often quantity, quality issue and quantity often wins out. But when you want a wall hanger, well, I hope you get the picture. Pun intended.

It's too bad the flagship phone cannot do the following, when it can, I might be interested. Until then, you will have to pry my camera from my dead cold hands.

Yes, look at Sony. Most of their cameras do a great job with in camera panorama photos. I'm sure there are other brands that do the same. Do you own a camera with panorama options. Probably not.

I believe modern cameras have enough technology in them. If we will be able to use all that technology is a different story.

OwlHarbor posed the question "Why do phones have more advanced technology than cameras"

Summary: To those camera engineers at traditional manufacturers, cell phone photography is an alien species invading Earth. I remember torment adjusting to the circuit design of transistors when being for years living with Vacuum Tube circuitry.

Long-winded discussion: Thinking trick, change the venue/object ... "Why does Tesla & SpaceX have more advanced technology than GM, Ford and Bowing Space Division" .... simply mind set, GM and Ford have been making cars for 100 years, and as Howe Mandel said in a comedy routine "But Thats Whatcha Do" people do not change easily.

Cell phones are the cameras like Tesla cars and SpaceX Rockets... a whole new way of thinking that the major manufacturers can not adapt to. NOR can the DSLR buyers comfortably adapt to it ... I preach SuperZoom pocket cameras as being great and that philosophy is poo-pooed as being inferior to the great pixel race "Full Fame" DSLR. Demening names such as "point and shoot are used." With modern AI processing, DSLR imitating the sensor size of a 35mm film are "Fool Frame" cameras. Face it, the pixel race is over... 1" sensors spiced with AI within the camera is enough for photography.

SuperZooms are old technology, I hold dear, but Cell Phones have optics and software within that is a whole new world like Tesla car Autonomous driving~!!! Hard for me to imagine letting go of the steering wheel, it took me years to have an automatic transmission and lose the feel of the road with power steering. Now pack away my cameras and use my cellphone... unimaginable but my eventual fate. The engineers at Ford, GM, Canon, Nikon, and now dead Kodak have been doing the same minor improvements for many decades... is this good enought?

If you got an 11-22mm, it is easy.
With a 50mm & stitching, any camera can.
And if someone has the patience this:

You would be amazed how popular vacuum technology is in audio circles nowadays... A lot of folks LOVE that sound as well as a lot of folks LOVE the look of diff. camera formats and diff. color science.... IMHo 1" sensors are going to be big coupled with AI.... But then I don't carry a suitcase and a bag of sticks around in the woods and a black cloth to cover my head... Lots of guitarist love that tube sag when pushing the older amps...
