Our desktop is my MAIN computer, having dual monitors, 3TB of HDs, and the HD drive dock.
(And the printer/scanner is right nest to it.)

Good setup.

I tried a track ball, once. Didn't like it at all, but I'm deadly with a mouse.

Same here...add a tablet to that.

[quote=Rongnongno]... The year Napoleon came back from Elba.....

This reminded me of the old palindrome, "Able was I ere I saw Elba." My folks came over from Oberbrechen in Hess-Darmstadt, Germany, in 1726. They brought with them a grandfather clock that was so old the shadow of the pendulum had worn a hole in the back.

I asked because when I went to Germany in 2003 almost everyone there prefer the track ball. They said only in the US do we have mice. But for the life of me I can't use the track ball.

When the Color Computer first came out it had a membrane keyboard, ARRRG!!! YUCK!
A short while later some company marketed what we called (nicknamed) a "Chicklet" keyboard.
The keys were white squares about the size of Chicklets, with black letters on them. It was a real keyboard and a drop-in replacement. OH so much nicer to work with!
I'll bet they sold a ton of those keyboards!

My desktop PC is old and way too slow. I want a good one mainly for managing and editing photos. I use Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Topaz AI (Denise, etc) have 45 mb images……100,000 images…..etc.

Would like to upgrade to a desktop that will last a while. Want to stay with PC.

Would appreciate knowing about good reviews of such desktops, other sources of help, or specific recommendations.

Thanks much

Chuck

If you get a suggestion for Exotic PC in Lincoln, Nebraska, I would not recommend them. I bought a desktop and a laptop last time I upgraded ($4800) and have had multiple issues with both., including shut downs while in the middle of working in a program, missing/non-functional USB ports, settings that don't hold., wrong Windows program. Shipping computers back for service after loading all my files was not an option. If shut downs were caused by wires worked loose in the original shipment, why would I pay shipping both ways (the desktop is 45 lbs. alone) for service and risk having the same problems resurface? The company is not getting it right & tight before sending to customer.

I can understand the advantages, but I still prefer the mouse. I don't like a mousepad, at all.

I just bought a Lenovo slim 7 from a BH Bild special. I'm coming from a 8 year old I5 with Windows 7. What a difference, except it's Windows 11 which I have to learn. At $900 with I7, 1 tb ssd, 32g ram, touch screen, back-lit keyboard it's a great deal. Also bought a 2Tb Samsung external ssd $109. No sales tax too.

I've always been leery of having more than one HDD inside the case. I'm not sure why, but maybe I'm concerned about the excess heat from a second or third drive. I have external boxes with three or four drive, and I can use them, if necessary.

I have 4 ssd drives in my tower without ever having a problem in 7 years. Installed them myself.

If it's white, you could call it your Ivory Tower.

Approximately 3 years ago I bought an "IBUYPOWER" PC. It is a gaming PC & modified for my photography. The initial cost was about $1395.00 @ Costco.

Specs. Intel Core i7-9700 @3GHZ
Upgraded to 64GB DDR RAM
64Bit OS with Win 11
500GB SSD (C drive used for OS and Apps) and 2TB HDD (D Drive Used for Working Photo Projects)
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super Graphics Card and NVidia Sound/RealTek High Def Sound
32" LG HD 4K monitor
Bluetooth
Wireless and Ethernet (Works great with Z9) fast downloads Running 900mbps down/40mbps up
Upgraded to Corsair Keyboard and Logitech Mouse (I gave away the IBuyPower keyboard and mouse)
Added external Optical Blu Ray DVD/CD drive and can burn photos to BluRay Disk or whatever media needed

Additionally I have a Non-Raid* back up system consisting of 7 daisy synced SSD drives via USB hub that allows for backup of all photos/data/docs. A total capacity of 42TBs of data. I utilize a MACBook Pro, and 4TB (cigarette box size) hard drive to review and backup photos in field.

I will soon swap out the 5 year old LG monitor with a 8K monitor to maximize viewing of 8K video etc from the Z9.

The IBuyPower.com website currently has some very reasonable deals. However, I like buying through Costco because of their return policy. I have a backup Dell XPS PC. It was built to Costco specs in 2011. It is still fast and reliable. It has never broken down and I only changed the HDD to a SSD which made it that much faster. The IBuyPower built to Costco specs seems to be following suit. No failures.

*See photographer "Joseph Cristina" online for a book on building a Non Raid System. Very helpful.

Hope this helps in some way.

I know mice are ubiquitous but I was forced onto the trackball by my habits. I had a standard 30" x 60" desk and it was covered with papers to a depth of 2-6" pretty much all over except leaving space for the keyboard. There were two pullout shelves one on each side but they were usually full of something (at least the one on the right) so there was no real estate available for mouse motion. This was before trackpads, so the only alternative was the trackball. I don't recall the brand but the first one I had was about a 3" diameter ball with four buttons spaced around the ball on the corners of a square container. It would also get covered with papers but it was easy enough to reach under the paperpile and operate the trackball. Stuck with it and now it's just the way my hand works. At 84 it becomes difficult to get used to new things, particularly when you have to learn new hand motions (and you already have something that works). I can operate my MacBook with the trackpad, but just barely, and I really like having buttons for the functions instead of hand gestures. Also, I'm a 10 finger typist and the trackpad is right below the keyboard so sometimes my wrist touches the trackpad and moves the cursor and I don't notice if I'm not watching the screen. My old laptop has the ability to turn the trackpad off, but the MacBook won't do it permanently (and my wife is an old experienced trackpad user and she needs the computer occasionally {even though she has her own}).
