I'm sure they do, but will the program let them find all the details necessary to refund all those people. This was an idea brought up on Lehto's Law.

For months now, at least three speed cameras in VA have been issuing speeding tickets for going just one MPH over the thirty-five mph speed limit in three different school zones. Many tickets have been issued during the summer, when school was not in session, so the speed limit would have been higher. After being notified, people don't have time to send a letter of protest before the fine is due, so they pay online and also pay a "convenience fee" for paying online.

The state finally admitted its mistake, and it says it will correct the cameras and issue refunds to those involved. Finding "those involved" could be an impossible task. Consider the process of going through thousands of tickets and checking for the time, date, and speed. Will they also refund the fee charged by the CC companies? Will they notify the Motor Vehicle Department to remove the violation? Will they notify all the insurance companies to remove the violation?

Technology is great - sometimes.

We had those damn things here for a while but people stood up to it and they were removed. They are now illegal.

Issuing tickets automatically is not a good idea.

Good idea. That's also a good defense against a radar ticket issued by a cop. The man who invented car radar got a speeding ticket and it defeated it by asking for the calibration data.

No and too many things that can happen to issue a false ticket when no crime was committed, we proved that here in Texas and that crap was soon removed from our streets. And, they never reduced accidents and such either.

The school zones here in Virginia are 25 MPH zones. So it is 11 MPH over the limit to trigger the tickets.

Every detail necessary is on the ticket generated at the event. Can’t view the Lehto video right now but I’m familiar with his YouTube channel. Always good information.

However, tickets don’t happen if you don’t drive in such a way as to get ticketed. In school zones it is ultra important.

Maybe not in the summer.

The local school has a display that shows your speed, but it's supposed to be active only during school hours, and those hours are posted on signs. Still, the 25 mph sign will flash and show that I'm driving over that speed when school is closed.

Accuracy is the determining factor. Also, the distance traveled to check the speed. I think "class action" suit for this.

The problem of "zero tolerance" laws, re: "...over is still over!".

And another aspect is that the regulation is handled, usually. by a third (for profit) party. In the old days, a bill-board and diminishing speed signs were used before cameras.

You can't measure anything with absolute accuracy. There is always a tolerance so "Zero Tolerance" is an oxymoron.

Ours have a qualifier sign that says 25 “during school hours” but otherwise it’s 45 mph. The sign is conspiracy posted.

Yes! "Zero Tolerance" is ridiculous.

The real problems is the Odometer might be off. Change of tire sizes, or not calibrated correctly, who has time to fight trivials.

Tire from new to legal limit of wear is 2% difference in the drivers favor. Oversized you are on your own. GPS would help to get a guesstimate of how much you’d need to compensate. Speedometers may be calibrated but for sure they can be tested for accuracy.
