Speed Cameras in VA Issuing Bogus Tickets

For months now, at least three speed cameras in VA have been issuing speeding tickets for going just one MPH over the thirty-five mph speed limit in three different school zones. Many tickets have been issued during the summer, when school was not in session, so the speed limit would have been higher. After being notified, people don't have time to send a letter of protest before the fine is due, so they pay online and also pay a "convenience fee" for paying online.

The state finally admitted its mistake, and it says it will correct the cameras and issue refunds to those involved. Finding "those involved" could be an impossible task. Consider the process of going through thousands of tickets and checking for the time, date, and speed. Will they also refund the fee charged by the CC companies? Will they notify the Motor Vehicle Department to remove the violation? Will they notify all the insurance companies to remove the violation?

Technology is great - sometimes.

Amazing they didn't think of that when they initiated the system.
Fewer people think anymore, they just do.

I hate those cameras but 1 mile per hour over is still over! How much buffer is fair?

How accurate do they require the speedometer in car be? How accurate are these speed cameras required to be? I think my car speedometer always reads a couple of mph higher than the camera.

Yes, the buffer - and the error. How accurate are those cameras?

My speedometer shows 1mph faster than actual - I have confirmed this with all the radar speed limit signs our towns use - it’s consistent - so I set my cruise to the posted speed and don’t worry about it.
Our LEO’s give 5 due to mechanical tolerances - but in school zones they give 2.
If your speedometer is off by 5 when you’re doing 15mph in a school zone - your vehicle needs to go to the dealer...

Have you heard of NORVA? That's Northern Virginia, where the sophisticated folks live.

In NYC it's 11 mph over the posted limit for a ticket. Luckily there's no points or increased insurance rates. That's why I have a dash cam and radar detector with a red light and speed camera database. Works for me.

I’m pretty sure they have computers to sort that out.

If NORVA includes Reston, then, I will make an exception. . .for ONE first-rate Middle Eastern restaurant (I don't recall the name)..That place was definitely "5-Star" cuisine! But, still not worth a 3,000 mile trip! (smile)
