Images and Comments..... I'm Just Curious!

Sometimes this place is like driving by a major wreck. You know you shouldn't slow down to look, because if you do, you might see a mangled body or two full of blood, and you don't want that, do you? Yet that is of course exactly why you slow down, isn't it?
I have long held strong opinions on this topic, and I will now forgo sharing them here...
I saw the flower. I moved on.
I got curious about what happened to Old Hippy, who hasn't been heard from since early in 2022.

That's a big improvement on saying it's NOT a photography site.
I've been blessed with some very good advice from members of this forum. Many of the photos I post are helped by following their suggestions. I appreciate all those that have contributed to my knowledge and love of photography. Still have a long way to go!

Well, there is a section called Photo Analysis.
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-20-1.htmlWhen I post a picture here, I'm not asking for criticism or how I could have made it better. If I wanted that, I would have posted it in Photo Analysis. In my opinion - and I haven't seen the thread - the commenter shouldn't have added criticism, and the poster shouldn't have replied in a hostile way. As I said, I haven't seen either.
If I show someone my new car, I don't want him to tell me all the bad things he's heard about it. Before buying the car, I would ask for opinions. I could give an example of introducing my girlfriend to someone, but you get the idea.

I agree with this. If the person isn't asking for any critique, then no need to add any comments if you don't like it.

Photo Gallery is supposed to be a non judgmental place where anyone can post their work.
Comment on what you like ignore what you don't like
And that is what I do. There are some that I don’t like ( out of focus, over processed, artificial frames, distracting names on photo, etc ) so I don’t comment. On the other hand, many that I do like have already had a large number of positive comments so I may onay show a smiley or not comment at all.
I retired from a career in engineering. The engineering paradigm is that a problem or opportunity is identified, parameters around it are established, and (usually) multiple alternative solutions are proposed. The benefits and shortcomings of each are identified and quantified, and an approach to the solution or opportunity for improvement is selected and implemented. Criticism, per se, is not part of the game.
As a photographer, I am always open to an alternative approach or technique that might lead to some improvement in what I am doing or which might remove some limitation in my process. But I am smart enough and experienced enough to know that my photographs are reasonably good right now. I'm not interested in anyone picking them apart. (I do have a couple of trusted folks who do have discussions like that with me, but they are probably kinder than most of you.)
You see, I'd go nuts if I tried to do what everybody said. So I go with who I trust for the big things.
Everything is permissible...but not everything is beneficial. "Intent is also subjective," said the first flying wingsuit inventor who jumped off the tallest building in New York in 1912.
"Said his best friend and collaborator at his funeral, 'he really did intend to fly...'"
As our Moms and/or teachers said, "if you can't say something nice...".

Subject change...sorry but yes, have wondered the same about Old Hippy...also Hal81 (not sure that was the number after his name) Beautiful flowers from Hippy, beautiful old homes from Hal. Can't remember who had a few meet-ups with her but Marge Laughlin (can't remember her user name) from Florence Alabama passed away in March and her husband passed in June. Such a sweet lady (Marg? maybe)
I think about my dad's favorite sayings when I see conflict here. "Be kind or be quiet" and his second favorite "If you see someone without a smile, give 'em one."
Years back more people respected that many folks posted photos without wanting a critique.
The folks who wanted mild critiques of their photos in the gallery, stated so when they post the image.. Those who always wanted a critique indicated that in their signature.

~ So, today someone posted a flower image (one of many - every day, and I'm also guilty). The Poster was
VERY proud of their image and said so in the Title and Body of the text in their post. I personally was not enamored with how the image was processed, so I refrained from posting my thoughts on said image.
...However, one poster actually did post, that while it was a very nice image, in his/her opinion was a bit over-saturated (even stating it was still a nice image)!
Oh, My!! What a Faux Pas that was!! The original poster tore that person up in no uncertain terms! How DARE that someone have an opinion of his/her work other than
Praises from On High!!
~ So,
I'm just curious. Why is the
Photo Gallery Off Sides to
Any critical review?
I DO understand that there is a critique section on UHH. So, then, do we always have to
Ooooo and Aaahh at images in the
Photo Gallery? We must all support images good or bad and save all our Heart Emojis and Thumbs - Up's for images that are borderline if not outright poorly done? I know for a fact that my own images need a lot of work, so I'm def not the Golden Boy/Girl here!
Anybody?

If you don't like it keep quiet and move on.
I post to gallery to share.
If someone likes it they are free to say so.
But it is not the critique section so if you don't like it move on.
Or perhaps ask a question.
Nothing wrong with that format.

I seem to recall that he was having a health issue. He took a short hiatus, came back for a while and…???
I rarely bother looking in the photo gallery. I learned early on that most people here post mainly snapshots. I’ll occasionally peruse the titles to see if something sounds interesting but usually just stick to the forums that interest me.

What
I found particularly egregious about Reuss'
scathing attack on the 'I'll never, ever go out and toot my horn without cause' image in question was
not that he (Reuss) suggested the flower pic exceeded the levels of saturation that
he'd have preferred in an image of his own, but was, in fact, that he
failed to make mention of how miserably the "flower" had been over-sharpened and/or over-clarified to the point of.... well...... something sort of.... extra
extra crunchy. Which in (some) lesser tummies might lead to indigestion. Or worse.
How many (thousands of) times has somebody quipped --and that we (the washed and unwashed masses of Uhh-ville) were forced to read (if we ever read, much less had learned to read, which relatively few do, the quip that) 'rules were made to be broken'? Despite the fact that there were neither rules or norms and even some social conventions in which we WERE NOT forced to read --much less view-- ANYTHING we didn't hafta!
Which is why I simply moved along. And said nothing.
Before this moment.
Which in itself is not a comment, pro or con.
