Certainly if the image starts with a photo, and is then modified. But in truth it is impractical to police those that start that way and those that don't.

What’s the opposite of artificial intelligence? The UHH community worrying about AI images.

If that is your thought, should any photoshop or Lightroom photos be on UHH?

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which images to PhotoShop.

We take photos to show others what we saw. Why bring AI into the photo and lie about what we photographed? Be honest about your photography.

Down in the South, we have an expression when someone gets unnecessarily fussy: 'Well, isn't that precious!'

We don't see the insect that extreme magnification brings out of our photos. We don't usually see it in B&W, blue tint, or sepia. Most darkroom tricks and lens technologies allow us to show what we did NOT see. It isn't about what we saw; it's about producing a (usually) 2-D representation that only starts with 'what we saw' and allows us to see more and to see differently.

Embrace the tech.

Given the fact that AI images are NOT photographs, should they even be allowed to be posted on a "Photographic Site" like Ugly Hedgehog?

This is a false statement "AI images are not photographs" Film photographs taken years before digital AI had items added and or removed, they were still considered photographs.

Anyone that seeks to ban images that started with a camera should not be allowed to post on photography sites.
Stop fearing modern technology, use what you want of it and judge not others for the brush they use on their canvas of light

So now lets screen all images to the purest standard, anything the demonstrates creativity will not be allowed to be posted or placed in a group of fake photographs like the un-pure Ansel Adams pictures he has duped us with calling them photographs he admitted to post production manipulation.

Or we could just accept them as a photograph

Creating a photograph requires specific equipment, a specific procedure and requires that specific challenges be met successfully. Creating AI-generated images comes with its own distinct method of production and specific challenges. What they have in common is that they both generate imagery, but the methods used to produce that imagery are distinctly different. They are clearly two different pursuits, which is why the end products should be classified differently.

A photograph doesn't lose that distinctiveness when we make PP adjustments to it or even add to it or take away some parts of it. It goes from being a plain photo to being a modified photo.

Having clear definitions is much more than a matter of semantics. The word "photo" means something specific to us, as does the expression "AI-generated image". It's important that the word "photo" carries on meaning what it always meant to us. If it loses that distinctiveness, the result will be ongoing ambiguity and confusion.
