Wow! That's something I would never do. I would ask her parents for a security deposit first. 🤣

We had a bad family incident years ago. At a family picnic (wife's family), her sister-in-law asked if she could practice driving with my not-yet-wife's new Mercury Comet. She declined, and the family got on her case. She finally agreed to let her drive. With the three of us in the car, she drove half a mile, made a turn, and hit another car. My fiance's car was damaged, and so was the other car. Going back to the picnic, her brother refused to pay for the repair. "You were the one who said she could drive your car." The whole family got on my wife's case for letting the sister-in-law drive the car. When we got married a year later, her brother, manager of a supermarket, couldn't get off work and travel two miles to the wedding. Aren't families great! 🤣

Not trying to be the grump on here but what's so bad about just saying I'd prefer you wait until you're stronger / older?
Teaching kids that somethings are expensive and need to be dealt with accordingly.

Couldn't you just let her use your tripod? Help her move it around if she wants?

I got my granddaughters a smaller, cheaper camera when they were that young and told them they needed to practice on that a while before they graduated to the big guys!

Giving young people exposure to good camera equipment is a wonderful experience for both child and grandparent/adult/aunt/Uncle, etc. But, I think common sense is also important and perhaps setting a D850 up on a tripod would result in a better experience and image for the child and less stress for the camera owner.

My experience very young children was at a family reunion. I had my Canon 5D MKII and 24-70 L lens setup on a tripod and was taking both individual and family group photos. Many of the youngsters were intrigued by the image showing up after the shots on the camera's LCD screen. I began letting them help set the focus point and pushing the shutter button on the cable release. They loved it and the gear was safeguarded.

My best advice is, do not discourage a young person showing interest in photography, but make sure you help set them up for success.

Picking up weight with your arms is a lot different than holding it in your hands and bringing it to your eye.

Correct!

My 5 year old grand daughter wanted to use my d850 with the 70 to 200 lens
The combined weight is slightly over 5 pounds. I told her she was not strong enough. She replied "yes i am". I have watched her pick up her 50 pound younger 4 year old brother so I thought maybe she is right.
I showed her how to hold the camera and then put the strap around her neck and watched her struggle to lift the camera to her eye. She learned that sometimes gramps is right. She has used the d500 with the 18 to 300 before. but is sure scary to watch. It is interesting to see the results
My 5 year old grand daughter wanted to use my d850... (show quote)

I'd be nervous letting a 5 year old handle one of my cameras. Then again, I don't have any grand kids.

The camera and lens were never at risk as the strap was around her neck. She is more than capable of lifting the weight, she is just too young to understand how use the camera. She learned that when could not get it done when she tried and was happy to know that there are some things she can't do yet. Your are correct sometimes no is all that needs to be said.

For what it is worth after shooting this combination I get tired. I use a cotton carrier on hikes.

Here’s one of my granddaughters shooting my son’s 5D3 (notice the close supervision). I don’t think I’d have let her hold my 5D4 (too heavy), but maybe my Fuji (again, with close supervision)

I was about that age when my dad encouraged me to take photographs. I remember him saying how interesting it was to see the world from a low angle as though he was seeing through the eyes of a child.
