My 5 year old grand daughter wanted to use my d850 with the 70 to 200 lens
The combined weight is slightly over 5 pounds. I told her she was not strong enough. She replied "yes i am". I have watched her pick up her 50 pound younger 4 year old brother so I thought maybe she is right.
I showed her how to hold the camera and then put the strap around her neck and watched her struggle to lift the camera to her eye. She learned that sometimes gramps is right. She has used the d500 with the 18 to 300 before. but is sure scary to watch. It is interesting to see the results

Picking up weight with your arms is a lot different than holding it in your hands and bringing it to your eye.

Little Brother is no "dead weight" a heavy camer and lens is. Little brothers enjot being picked up by bigger sites and kinda help with the lift- cameras don't
My advice- get your granddaughter a small set of lightweight kid's colorful dumbells so she can work out. Get her a lightweight camera and of cell phone and teach her photography.
Now she knows Gramps is right! When she becomes a teenager, she may "reevaluate" the wisdom of her parents and grandparents It all turns out well in the end. We know- we have a daughter, 3 granddaughters- and one son. The boys are seriously outnumbered!

Right. If I have to move a 40-lb bag of kitty litter, I have to grasp it with both arms and hug it to my body and struggle with it out to the car. No way could I lift it above my chest area.
she has not mastered the camera yet although her 8 year old sister gets it correct sometimes when using the D850 with the 24 to 70 mm. I never relax knowing the replacement cost is $4,400 or $5,150 for the longer zoom
Dear Home Brower,
I know what you are talking about ,would be interested to see a few pictures she took !

Couldn't you borrow a second camera? Bet you would have gotten great pictures of your grand daughter with the D850!

I would set her up for that set up on a tripod & stay with her so you can move it where she wants it until she gets strong enough. Can also show her that full auto takes a great photo, & how Aperture affects the photo & the A mode might be best for her. Just a thought. The other option would be a decent point & shoot with different modes. Happy shooting.

Yes, it has happened to me! My son was first published in a major metropolitan newspaper at 8, interned there at 9 and youngest member ever (at the time) of the National Press Photographer Association at 10. Stop worrying about weight handling, that ability will come with age. Show her how to rest the camera on something or use a tripod. Encourage the shooting aspect! She a little sponge right now, give her all the information she can hold!
A five-year-old has no business being responsible for a $5000 camera.

Then why do you let her do it? It’s perfectly alright to tell a child NO once in awhile.
Thanks for sharing. Precious memories. Did you get a photo? My grandkids are just a bit older, but use their iPads to take video / photos. They got use to ipads when the schools were closed and they were taking classes via Zoom.
I was fully expecting to read that the camera was dropped. I’m glad that such was not the outcome!
