"Road tax" is just an excuse to collect money. NY collects almost $1,000,000 every day from the Throgs Neck Bridge. I doubt it costs that much to maintain it. I've paid $4,626 in tolls over the past twenty-six years, and I try to avoid toll roads.
Might be more than you think - when I was stationed in CA in the 80’s, the feds told the state to get the average speed down (55 was the mandated speed then) as it was pushing 70 - or they were going to withhold road money - CA said keep your money, we’re spending $1M/mile on our roads and your money doesn’t give us 200 miles - not worth it with the amount of traffic we need to move… I do know that the roads were fairly decent then and now they are terrible - inflation of 40 years - got be be expensive.
