If you thought about buying an EV to save money on gas, think again! Texans who drive all-electric vehicles will pay the price to the state. Beginning Sept. 1, 2023, owners of those vehicles will pay a $200/year fee to the state at the time of registration or renewal. New electric vehicles issued two years of registration to match a two-year inspection will have to pay a $400 fee.
Reason for this, as the state thinks, is that for an EV owner, there is much less fuel tax that is not being paid on the purchase of gasoline. This is the state's way of mitigating those losses. Betcha that other states will soon follow suit.

Personally, I think that anybody who buys an all electric vehicle is nuts!
I am in Texas and I see a lot of electric cars here so I guess that how the state sees as a loss of gas tax. Besides, most electric car owners are wealthy because if you're poor you can't afford electric car.
Total stupidity to buy one, Where do they think they are going to get enough electric power to charge all those batteries?

Yes, reduced revenue for "road taxes" since the <original> revenue is based on gasoline sales.
Now people who hardly drive their electric vehicle will complain- :I'm paying the same as the guy who drives it every day.".

Nobody should be overly surprised that the state would NEVER give up on a potential revenue stream.
Tax! Tax! Tax! Also: Fees and Assessments . . . .

I agree 100%. I can't believe the amount of money that all of the car manufacturers have "invested" in electric vehicles. I could see myself possibly purchasing a hybrid, but NEVER an EV.
Texas uses the gas tax to build and maintain highways. I suppose Texas either needed to do this or tax electricity!!

I guess as Texas doesn't have enough electricity.
Alabama if I recall correctly also charges All Electric Vehicle owners a Fee.

With the tax on gas, you pay according to how much gas you use, so if you drive less, you pay less. The only way to make it fair to electric car drivers would be to figure out how to tax electricity used to charge cars.
