separate meters...

What they should and probably eventually will do is put a tax on mileage paid at yearly inspection.

Some of the folks here are very misinformed on EVs, electricity, taxes, and renewables. Please educate yourself before making comments. You definitely have a right to your own opinions, but don’t base them on hearsay and/or emotion.

States like New York and california are not going to lose that gas tax revenue. The politicians cannot solve everyday problems, but they will solve this one.

Oh...the gift that keeps on giving that is a well-kept secret by the Green Movement and the administration's agenda. Just wait..! There is more to come including a means to tax for the loss of the Federal Tax associated with fuel. Then there will be an environmental disposal fee for expended batteries.

Totally agree, Linda. As 40s born boomers, my friends and I are convinced we were born and have lived during the sweet spot. The collective in this country only respond to issues when they become emergencies.

I recently read that 95% of all electric vehicles are still on the road. The other 5% made it home.

Many are in your situation...it's an evolution just like hand held calculators and computers. The early adopters are the ones who can afford the early higher costs and pave the way to more innovation and more volume, lower cost, higher demand and then the market forces take over. Our generation is not the target audience for these changes (many aren't about to anyway) but our grandchildren certainly are and they are much more open to innovation and progress.
Well said.

UHH membership is skewed to senior citizens, so your observation is rarely heard here.

And it's not just "progress," it's how to keep our earth habitable for humans!

And yet somehow it's more acceptable to spend money to help citizens after emergencies such as the frozen electric grid in Texas a couple of winters ago. What caused that disaster? Shortsightedness and greed: save money today, forget tomorrow!

If you thought about buying an EV to save money on gas, think again! Texans who drive all-electric vehicles will pay the price to the state. Beginning Sept. 1, 2023, owners of those vehicles will pay a $200/year fee to the state at the time of registration or renewal. New electric vehicles issued two years of registration to match a two-year inspection will have to pay a $400 fee.

Reason for this, as the state thinks, is that for an EV owner, there is much less fuel tax that is not being paid on the purchase of gasoline. This is the state's way of mitigating those losses. Betcha that other states will soon follow suit.
If you thought about buying an EV to save money on... (show quote)

For several years now the government has rumored a milage based road tax as regulation and market forces have demanded higher gas milage in vehicles... Texas it would seem is taking the first step albeit some sort of registration fee.

"Road tax" is just an excuse to collect money. NY collects almost $1,000,000 every day from the Throgs Neck Bridge. I doubt it costs that much to maintain it. I've paid $4,626 in tolls over the past twenty-six years, and I try to avoid toll roads.

Might be more than you think - when I was stationed in CA in the 80’s, the feds told the state to get the average speed down (55 was the mandated speed then) as it was pushing 70 - or they were going to withhold road money - CA said keep your money, we’re spending $1M/mile on our roads and your money doesn’t give us 200 miles - not worth it with the amount of traffic we need to move… I do know that the roads were fairly decent then and now they are terrible - inflation of 40 years - got be be expensive.

Bridge tolls in NYC are excessive, hard to imagine how that affects working people who have to cross those bridges twice daily as they come and go from work.... Hate to say it Jerry, just one more reason to move to FL.

One more? I haven't come across one reason yet.

That's OK Jerry, if you like high taxes and intrusive regulation I would suggest that NY is your Nirvana. If you have an aging gas stove I would suggest you replace it before Hochul pushes here ban on such appliances even further.
