I guess as Texas doesn't have enough electricity.

Only when idiot planners shut too many generating plants down for maintenance at the same time.

They'll need the money to beef up the grid, too.

Whoever thought electric cars are a solution, think again. The problems are starting to be exposed and will be a distant memory within 10 years.

In New Zealand we have what they call RUC (Road Users Charge). This comes about because in the old days diesel vehicles were most used on farms and since petrol tax is used for road repairs etc but the diesel wasn't used on roads they were exempt from tax. So they introduced RUC (which you buy in 10,000km chunks). This makes up for the time when the diesel vehicle is used on a road. Then along came EVs. There was no RUC charge on them because they didn't use a fossil fuel AND to encourage people to swap to 'cleaner' EVs. But it was accepted that some time in the future they would have to start paying their share of the fuel tax since they also used the roads (and being heavier actually do more damage). This amnesty on RUC is being introduced either this year or next and will come as a huge shock to all those EV users who have been getting a free ride till now. This will make the swap to an EV less attractive as a cost saving move.

Texas uses the gas tax to build and maintain highways. I suppose Texas either needed to do this or tax electricity!!

Yup. Texas is one of the states with no state income tax.

If you thought about buying an EV to save money on gas, think again! Texans who drive all-electric vehicles will pay the price to the state. Beginning Sept. 1, 2023, owners of those vehicles will pay a $200/year fee to the state at the time of registration or renewal. New electric vehicles issued two years of registration to match a two-year inspection will have to pay a $400 fee.

Reason for this, as the state thinks, is that for an EV owner, there is much less fuel tax that is not being paid on the purchase of gasoline. This is the state's way of mitigating those losses. Betcha that other states will soon follow suit.

The feds will probably start doing this soon. "or should"

Nary a comment on the effect that burning fossil fuels has had on earth's climate

With the tax on gas, you pay according to how much gas you use, so if you drive less, you pay less. The only way to make it fair to electric car drivers would be to figure out how to tax electricity used to charge cars.

Personally, I think that anybody who buys an all electric vehicle is nuts!

Remember that old saying? "Get a horse!"

From the online reports by EV owners I've seen, the cost of charging isn't much of a savings, if any, over gasoline. Of course, there's the savings on maintenance. EVs are very heavy, though, and NY charges for registration based on weight. I suspect larger tires will cost more than smaller ones. I think I'd be nervous the whole time I was driving an EV. "How long will this run?" "Where can I get a charge?"

It's not bad enough yet; people are greedy and uwilling to change their current lifestyles. The next generation or the one after will pay the real price.
