The only difficulty is to make sure you load the file to the "root" directory. Other than that it is really easy.

Why is that difficult. You just scared him off.

As I have been having some weird actions on the part of my Nikon D5600 I contacted Nikon about the situation and they suggested that I first update the firmware on the unit, which is 1.03 and they say it needs to be updated to the current 1.10.
I have no idea of what is involved in doing this so am asking for opinions as to whether I, a newby, should try to update or send the camera in to Nikon and let them update it. I called up the instructions and it appears that it is something requiring more experience than I have. Positive assistance would be appreciated, trolls take a holiday.

Yes, you can do it, provided you read and follow instructions extremely closely.

The most important things to do are to:

> Charge a relatively new, known-good battery to 100%. Then install and use that to power the camera during the update.

> Did I say to follow the instructions extremely closely?

> BE PATIENT. Updates can take a while. Don't touch the camera until told to do so by a message on the rear LCD.

I've done a bunch of updates to Nikons, Canons, and Lumix bodies. Procedures differ a bit from model to model, but the idea is the same. You first install that fresh battery. Then you format a flash memory card (CF, SD, etc.) in the camera, remove the card from the camera and put it in your computer's card reader. Next you download a firmware update file, and de-compress it if told. Then you copy the uncompressed file to the memory card, insert the card in the camera, and make a menu selection to update the firmware. Finally, you relax and wait for the "done" message.

Once you've done it, it'll seem simple.

Along with what is below & is probably in the links posted is if there is more than 1 update available, you need to do them all starting with the earliest one first & work your way up to the latest. Create a folder on your computer & name it something like 5600_Updates. Download all the firmware updates into the folder & then you can follow the instructions from Nikon. I have only done one for the D810 & was not hard at all. Good luck, Tom

Not sure that’s true - at least with my various cameras the newest update also pulls in any updates that may not have been done previously - Nikon might be different?

When you go to the website and download the firmware update, the instructions for updating are there for you to read. It isn't difficult to do. I have updated my camerss several times with no problems.

There are 2 lots of instructions available from Nikon re the Firmware update, have you read both of these?

The download page.............
1. https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/326.html

additional step by step detailed procedure, linked to within the above.................
2. https://download.nikonimglib.com/archive2/ZVTFm00PDx8K02B22ZU48B69Ch48/DSLR_Firmup_Win_En.pdf

And if you want to look at a video that shows you how to do it, look at this video by Steve Perry.

The key is to make sure you copy the firmware to the Root Directory.

As others have said, go to Nikon's site and follow instructions. It's as simple as following a cookbook recipe and easier then putting Ikea furniture together.

if you could explain in more detail, those “weird actions” perhaps some UHHers might be able to help you resolve the issue.

Wondering what the weird actions are? My daughters D5600 flattened every battery overnight due to the bluetooth continually looking for her paired iPad and iPhone even when it was turned off. Deleting the pairings only worked while the camera was turned on with them resetting when it was turned off. Also the 2 button full reset did not work and it would not do that update from 1.03 to 1.10. I did finally fix it by turning on Airplane Mode after deleting the pairings and then turning the camera off. Turning it back on the pairings were not there and the battery does not go flat overnight any more, however I still could not get it to update the firmware! She's happy she can use it now without charging the battery everyday! My D5600 updated without problem but I've never used the bluetooth or wifi options. My battery lasts for months. Cheers JohnR

You will see instructions as you download the firmware update package. Be sure to have a fully charged battery.

Actually it's easy although even with the most experienced person sometime (although very rare) that it would render the camera dead.

Don’t feel bad. This is a necessary evil for digital cameras. While I don’t use Nikon there is little difference in firmware.
First, get an SD card and format it in the camera. Then go onto the Nikon website and search for the firmware download instructions. Download it from the computer to the card. Search your manual. There is a file that will instruct you how to download the firmware. The firmware will fix bugs in the camera’s computer.

WiFi transmission takes a lot of power. It should be off unless you need it for file transfer. However, most camera companies make it so awkward to set up and use, that the temptation is to leave it on. That is one reason to remove the battery when the camera is not in use.
