As I have been having some weird actions on the part of my Nikon D5600 I contacted Nikon about the situation and they suggested that I first update the firmware on the unit, which is 1.03 and they say it needs to be updated to the current 1.10.
I have no idea of what is involved in doing this so am asking for opinions as to whether I, a newby, should try to update or send the camera in to Nikon and let them update it. I called up the instructions and it appears that it is something requiring more experience than I have. Positive assistance would be appreciated, trolls take a holiday.

It would probably be easier if you went to the Nikon USA website. You will find detailed instructions there. Much better that way than someone typing them out here.

Along with what is below & is probably in the links posted is if there is more than 1 update available, you need to do them all starting with the earliest one first & work your way up to the latest. Create a folder on your computer & name it something like 5600_Updates. Download all the firmware updates into the folder & then you can follow the instructions from Nikon. I have only done one for the D810 & was not hard at all. Good luck, Tom

No better time to learn. Read the instructions that Nikon provides. In fact I print them out and follow carefully step by step. It may take a couple of attempts but it really is not that difficult..

It’s not that hard the whole thing may take 10 minutes. Just do it.

Read instructions posted here.
Go to YouTube and search for “ How to update Nikon firmware”. Videos will come up.
or Nikon website and search for videos.
If you have a Nikon dealer nearby, go there.
It is rather simple but if first time it could be intimidating.

First, read from the site. The current update will cover all prior. If this is not true, they will tell you. Second, bonus time, use your smallest SD card, the one that is so small you thought to threw it away. On the outside put a large E for emergency. Erase the update you just did with it. Now, put it back in the camera and tell the camera to copy your settings to the chip. Why? You are in the desert and your settings get all screwed up. You can reset to factory default and lose your back button focus or *wait for it" restore your settings from the too small SD card.

I have updated each of my Nikon cameras multiple times. I was concerned the first time, , but with experience became more confident. While there are multiple steps, the individual steps are not difficult. Whether you should do it yourself depends on your confidence in your ability to follow instructions. While none of the steps are difficult, this is not a time to be freelancing.

Contrary to what was said above, firmware updates are each complete and self-contained. The entire software is reloaded each time. Unless there is specific instruction otherwise, you do not need to sequentially install the intervening updates.

Most of the steps don't even involve your camera. They deal with getting the new firmware downloaded, expanded, and copied onto your SD card. If you mess those up, you will know about it without ever involving your camera.

The hardest part is sometimes finding where the software has saved the .bin file after uncompressing it. I've had to use the "Find" function on my computer a time or two to track it down.

The most important two things are to make sure to copy the .bin file to the root directory of your SD card and to have a charged battery in your camera. And once installation starts in the camera, leave everything alone until you get a message on the rear display, usually telling you to turn the camera off.

This is a pretty routine maintenance function. It's good to know how to do it, and it's good to keep the firmware current. Designers have put some protections in place over the years that make it a lot less dangerous than it was when cameras were more primitive. I encourage you to do it yourself. You can use Explorer or the equivalent Apple directory function to verify that the .bin file is on the memory card and in the right place.

Make sure that is the case with Nikon updates. It may be, but I know the opposite is the case for Fuji so it’s worth confirming.

The update works fine, IF you follow the directions exactly. Some people don't pay attention to them, and they have problems. Just take it one step at a time. No problem!

Updating the firmware is a simple process. Just go on Nikon’s web site and they have detailed instructions on performing an update.

The only difficulty is to make sure you load the file to the "root" directory. Other than that it is really easy.

Definitely. I always make sure there is nothing on the card before I save the update.
