I bought a 36X telephoto lens from Apexel Technology Co. It is adjustable and should work with an iPhone. It is a clamp on style.

You could do your own google searching but I was curious.

This video shows what I saw being done at Yellowstone. I don't remember the brands of phone, spotting scope or adapter. Google searching will lead you to many ways of doing this.

Really not sure if this was helpful or not. It will probably cost me a lot of money. (Sorry--Just a bit of levity--I'm gonna have to look into this more) Thanks for the post.

When I spoke to a B & H salesman, he said that the telephoto lenses for the iPhone were kind of gimmicky, not real good quality.

I can’t believe it but I sold all my Nikon equipment. Obviously there are photos from my iPhone that will never compare to a DSLR but 95% of the time, the phone captures the image I want.

That being said, is anyone familiar with a good telephoto attachment for an iPhone? A clip on would work. Thoughts anyone?

Carol

Hi Carol. I also invite you to subscribe to the Smartphone Photography section. There’s a lot of good information as well as great photos so you can see what others are doing with their smartphones.

As for add on lenses for smartphones, I there are some pretty good ones and some not so great. I have to agree with one poster who talks about using add on lenses to phones with multiple lenses is iffy, at best. Personally, I am waiting until September to see what the upcoming iPhone 15 series has to offer. If it has a optical long zoom lens, I’ll likely upgrade from my iPhone 13 Pro Max. In the meantime, enjoy photography with your iPhone and share some of your photos with us on the smartphone forum.

I have also heard rumors that Sony is or will be providing some of this equipment to Apple. The question is: will Sony keep the best for itself ? Anyway… no sense buying anything for a few months, I think.

Scroll to the bottom of the page titled “Forum Selections” and select “all sections.” Then scroll down to select “Smartphone Photography.” It’s about 3/4 of the way down the list.

In May I spent a week in Yellowstone. The majority of guides and photogs are using Swarovski spotting scopes with Olin adapters to attach their high end smart phones to the spotting scopes. The Olin adapter is solid and quick on and off. Here is a picture of a typical gaggle of photogs shooting a wolf den at Yellowstone. Notice that virtually everyone is using a spotting scope and smart phone. There are still some photogs lugging around cameras and long lenses, but their numbers are declining faster than I had anticipated.

That looks like the spot on Slough Creek where I got a photo of the wolf den and a black pup sitting next to the den. I didn't have my good scope with me so my photos weren't that great. The den was over a mile away.

Short answer: Don’t waste your time and $. Why? 1) The iPhone uses several lenses together. When I put on an add-on lens, it covers some of the other lenses and the phone can’t figure out which one to use. It keeps flipping back and forth. Even when I position it perfectly on one of the 3 iPhone 13’s lenses so it doesn’t cover the other ones, the iPhone does its AI computer processing and the image comes out weird. 2) even Moment says to only use its wide angle lens. It’s 2x lens should be used only to created an “artistic effect”, according to them . What that means is that the image will come out weird (from my experience). 3) I used my 2x add on lens on my iPhone 7+ and it was fine. On the iPhone 8 and anything above that, just enlarging the regular iPhone image came as good as the 2x lens . On the iPhone 13 and 14, the 2x images were worthless. 3) the iPhone 15 is likely to come with a 140-150 mm equivalent optical lens (not just a digital zoom). I read that the Android 23s from one of the Korean phones is great and zooms optically tremendously.

There are apps that handle that; I use the PhoneSkope App. I have a PhoneSkope adapter, but I prefer another brand and it still works with that adapter. These apps limit the phone to using one camera at a time.
