I can’t believe it but I sold all my Nikon equipment. Obviously there are photos from my iPhone that will never compare to a DSLR but 95% of the time, the phone captures the image I want.

That being said, is anyone familiar with a good telephoto attachment for an iPhone? A clip on would work. Thoughts anyone?

The cameras in cellphones have serious horsepower...nothing wrong with ditching your dedicated system.
The link provided (gasp) has some nice choices...very inexpensive considering.
Heck you can even shoot with an anamorphic lens now...

A place to start.

At Yellowstone a year ago I watched a guy put his iPhone in a bracket attached to a "spotting scope". He was getting better shots of the distant eagle than the DSLR people with 800mm lenses.

There are many on Amazon - A friend uses a Gosky Piper Monocular Telescope and is impressed with the quality…

You could do your own google searching but I was curious.

This video shows what I saw being done at Yellowstone. I don't remember the brands of phone, spotting scope or adapter. Google searching will lead you to many ways of doing this.

Sorry Carol, 95 % of the time my mirrorless captures images my iPhone could only dream about.
Least Bittern with breakfast. 30 fps, 1/3000 sec. @ 600 mm

Interesting move, Carol! I have been thinking of doing the same. The images from iPhones (and others) these days are amazing. And, some can produce RAW images.

For the past few years, after getting images with my full-frame DSLR (Nikon D750) I would take a few with my iPhone XR. And, sometimes, a short video. Those images and videos were for posting on social media. And, they were great for that. And, bonus, the iPhone records the lat/long location. So, no need for a GPS.

Now, both the camera and the phone are under consideration for replacement. And, I am thinking of going same direction as you… with new iPhone only. So, I will follow your thread with great interest. 👍👍

Great bird photo! I am going to research the monoculars with iPhone attachments. Amazon has a Portix with 53,000 reviews….an inexpensive one with decent reviews. I don’t want to go too large as I would like to be able to take handheld shots if possible.

Never in a million years did I think my Nikon would go and a little phone would replace it. Check out BH Photo for cash or credit when selling your equipment.

I would suggest a Vortex spotting scope as they have some of the best optics. Get a bracket to attach your cellphone and you won't be disappointed.

Short answer: Don’t waste your time and $. Why? 1) The iPhone uses several lenses together. When I put on an add-on lens, it covers some of the other lenses and the phone can’t figure out which one to use. It keeps flipping back and forth. Even when I position it perfectly on one of the 3 iPhone 13’s lenses so it doesn’t cover the other ones, the iPhone does its AI computer processing and the image comes out weird. 2) even Moment says to only use its wide angle lens. It’s 2x lens should be used only to created an “artistic effect”, according to them . What that means is that the image will come out weird (from my experience). 3) I used my 2x add on lens on my iPhone 7+ and it was fine. On the iPhone 8 and anything above that, just enlarging the regular iPhone image came as good as the 2x lens . On the iPhone 13 and 14, the 2x images were worthless. 3) the iPhone 15 is likely to come with a 140-150 mm equivalent optical lens (not just a digital zoom). I read that the Android 23s from one of the Korean phones is great and zooms optically tremendously.

I have been looking at the new Sony phones...amazing capabilities now.
They are hard at work integrating their phones to their cameras...the cellphone carries the heavy horsepower of software (where cameras are weakest) with the hardware of their camera bodies.

A perfect match is about to arrive...Sony is very close to it now.
